Alright, so you've just kicked off your adventure in Final Fantasy IX, and your first real challenge is the fight against the Masked Man in Prima Vista. Don't sweat it too much, though – this battle is more about learning a key mechanic than pure survival!

First off, let's talk about how battles work here. It's called the Active-Time Battle (ATB) system. See that bar next to your character's HP and MP at the bottom of the screen? Once it fills up, you can pick an action. Most options are pretty straightforward, but 'Change' just swaps your character between the front and back rows. The fight with the Masked Man itself isn't too tough; he doesn't hit hard, and sometimes he'll even trip and do nothing for a turn. Honestly, you don't even *need* to win this fight to progress. You could even attack your own party members if you wanted to!

The real goal here is to steal. Enemies in FFIX can have multiple items you can pilfer, and they have different rarities. If an enemy has four item slots, you've got about a 100% chance to steal the common item, a 25% chance for uncommon, a 6.25% chance for rare, and a tiny 0.39% chance for the very rare one. The Masked Man has items in his first three slots: a Potion, a Wrist, and the one you really want – the Mage Masher. Keep using the 'Steal' command with all your characters until you snag that Mage Masher. Don't worry if Cinna or anyone else falls in battle; it's not required for them to survive.

Once you've got the Mage Masher, you can just spam the 'Attack' command to finish off the Masked Man. After the battle, the game will take over. You'll get a prompt to make a choice – you'll need to agree to 'kidnap' Princess Garnet. Do that, and you'll be off to the city of Alexandria!
