Master Chapter 17 'Black Flames' in Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation! Learn enemy types, ally recruitment, and strategies for the Bottomless Canyon map.

Alright, welcome to Chapter 17, 'Black Flames'! This one takes place in the Bottomless Canyon, and your main goal is to Seize the spot where the boss is. Get ready, because this map throws a ton of enemies at you right from the start, and it doesn't let up!

Enemies You'll Face:

  • Cavalier
  • Great Knight
  • Paladin
  • Knight
  • General
  • Bow Knight
  • Sorcerer
  • Troubadour
  • Strategist
  • Faceless

New Allies Joining You:

  • Xander (Paladin) - Joins Turn 2
  • Leo (Dark Knight) - Joins Turn 2
  • Odin (Dark Mage) - Joins Turn 3
  • Laslow (Mercenary) - Joins Turn 3
  • Peri (Cavalier) - Joins Turn 3
  • Niles (Outlaw) - Joins Turn 3

Preparation is Key:

Before you even start, make sure you bring your absolute best units. You won't have many slots, so choose wisely! Equip your units with Sting Shurikens and Armorslayers, as there are a lot of heavily armored enemies like Generals and Great Knights. Magic users will also be super helpful here to punch through their high Defense.

Map Features to Watch Out For:

The main things to keep an eye on are the Fire Orb, the Launchers, and the Forts. Enemies will spawn from these Forts throughout the chapter, so be prepared for constant reinforcements. Both you and the enemy can use the Fire Orb and Launchers, so be mindful of their positions and potential damage.

Turn 2: Reinforcements and Rescues!

As soon as Turn 2 hits, you'll see a huge wave of reinforcements appear, including a lot of Generals. But don't panic! Just as things seem overwhelming, your Nohrian siblings, Xander and Leo, will arrive to help. These guys are prepromoted and strong enough to handle a lot of the pressure. Xander's Siegfried can hit at both melee and range, and both he and Leo are pretty tanky, though they can be a bit slow. Use them to start controlling the enemy tide.

Turn 3: More Allies Arrive!

On Turn 3, you'll get even more help with Xander and Leo's retainers: Laslow and Peri for Xander, and Odin and Niles for Leo. Odin is a Dark Mage, Laslow is a Mercenary, Peri is a Cavalier, and Niles is an Outlaw. Now, here's the catch: these guys are generally underleveled compared to the enemies on the map. They can easily be one-shot, so don't rely on them for direct combat unless they're paired up or you're very careful. Use them more for scouting or to support your stronger units.

Dealing with the Boss and Objective:

The boss of this chapter is Iago, a Sorcerer. Since he's a Sorcerer, he'll have low Defense, so focus your attacks on him. Keep an eye on those Fire Orb and Launcher users – try to take out the Bow Knights using them first, and keep your flying units safe until then. Reinforcements will keep coming until you defeat Iago and Seize the tile he's on. Once you seize that tile, you'll be able to save your game and visit your MyCastle. Good luck!
