!Part 1
Comprehensive walkthrough for Part 1 of Half-Life, offering tips, strategies, and secrets for a conservative playstyle. Covers PC version differences and updates.
This is a very complete walkthrough of Half-Life that includes all of the best tips, strategies, and secrets discovered or heard about during thirteen years of playing the game. It was written with a conservative play style in mind, meaning that very few areas are skipped, and keeping your character healthy is always the main concern. The top priority was to take as little damage as possible, followed by using as little ammo as possible, especially rare ammo. Nothing is skipped except for a few areas that are deemed to be way more trouble than they're worth. The walkthrough was written with the original version (1.0.0.5) and patched versions (1.0.1.5, 1.1.0.6, 1.1.1.2) installed, as well as the Source and non-Source versions available on Steam. SRC notes have been added wherever significant differences were noticed in the Source version.
Version 1.50 (10/2/2012) Notes and Credits:

Part 3
Navigate the initial stages of Half-Life, from the Black Mesa Inbound tram ride to the Anomalous Materials chapter, including essential movement techniques and early puzzle solutions.
This guide covers essential movement techniques and the initial sections of Half-Life, including the Hazard Course, Black Mesa Inbound, and Anomalous Materials.
Key Movement Techniques:
- Jump-crouching (Duck Jumping): Essential for navigating obstacles. Combine crouching and jumping.
- Crouch-running: Moving while holding the 'Duck' key, but not the 'Walk' key. Faster than true crouch-walking.
- True Crouch-walking: Holding both 'Duck' and 'Walk' keys simultaneously for very slow movement.
- Sneak-shooting: Approaching unaware enemies and shooting small, exposed parts to kill them without alerting them. Effective with the Hornet Gun around corners.
Hazard Course (Training Room):
Recommended to play at least once to learn jump-crouching and crouch-jumping, which are crucial for later gameplay.
Glitch: Frozen on Lifts
A glitch can occur after riding a lift, freezing the player. To break free, crouch and move. Avoid crouching on moving lifts. Jumping just before the lift stops may help prevent this glitch.
Black Mesa Inbound (Sections c0a0 - c0a0d): RIDING TO WORK
This is the initial tram ride. No actions are required, but you can observe the environment. You'll see a security guard, pass through areas seen in add-ons, and briefly see the G-Man in another tram car near the end.
Section c0a0e: BEING LET IN
After the tram stops, follow the security guard out, through a reinforced door, and to another large door. Wait for the "Anomalous Materials" chapter to begin.
Anomalous Materials (Section c1a0): STARTING FUN
Go to the desk with the security guard. After he speaks, use the "Use item" key on the desk to press a hidden button and sound an alarm. You can also interact with the communications console. Proceed down the corridor with colored stripes.
After a corner, you can explore a computer room. Follow the brown stripe past rooms to a guarded door. You can try to listen to conversations or turn off lights in another room. Return to the corridor junction and go down the small ramp to section c1a0d.
Section c1a0d: GET YOUR HEV ON
Turn right past the ramp and follow the green stripe to the break room. Face the microwave oven and repeatedly press the "Use item" key to make the microwave casserole explode. This action may earn a comment.
Part 4
Follow the green wall stripe to find the HEV suit room and prepare for action in Half-Life Part 4. Learn how to get your first weapons.
- 1Leave the break room and follow the green wall stripe to the employee locker room.
- 2Enter the bathroom in the back right corner, then proceed to the HEV suit room in the back left corner.
- 3Use the control panel in the HEV suit room to open a case with a suit inside, then walk into the case to put it on.
- 4Find the locker labeled "Freeman" near the bathroom entrance and open its door.
- 5Enter the "Freeman" locker to pick up an armor battery.
- 6Check the wall-mounted first aid station around the corner. (Note: First aid stations won't make their characteristic sound if your health is 100.)
- 7Return to the main corridor and follow the blue wall stripe to the security post.
- 8The guard will open the security door for you once they see you wearing the HEV suit.
- 9Proceed through the security door and the next door to load section c1a0a.
- 10In section c1a0a, use the button panel to the left of some doors to open them.
- 11Get on the lift past the doors and use its button to descend to a lower level (or climb down the side ladder).
- 12Go through some doors and down a corridor until section c1a0b loads.
- 13In section c1a0b, enter the control room and wait for three scientists to talk to you.
- 14After one scientist uses a retinal scanner, go through the unlocked door.
- 15Across from two scientists who notice equipment problems, use a button panel to summon a lift.
- 16Use the lift's button panel to go up a level.
- 17Exit the lift and go down the corridor until you reach the test chamber door, loading section c1a0e.
- 18In section c1a0e, enter the test chamber's outer room and wait for two scientists to open the main test chamber doors.
- 19Go through the main doors and across the chamber to a small ramp.
- 20Climb the ladder past the ramp to reach an upper walkway.
- 21Use the walkway's computer panel and press the button when its red glass cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) rises.
- 22Watch as the scanning machine powers up.
- 23Climb back down the ladder and stand next to the cage near the ramp's bottom.
- 24When the "specimen" arrives, quicksave.
- 25Get behind the gadget the specimen is mounted on and push it into the scanning beam.
- 26Move back and wait to be teleported to border world locations, leading to the "Unforeseen Consequences" chapter.
- 27In section c1a0c, check for a rare vortigaunt encounter in the test chamber ruins. If one appears, restore your quicksave and repeat the teleportation process. (Avoid pulling the specimen's gadget out of the scanning beam after insertion, as this almost certainly triggers the vortigaunt.)
- 28Leave the test chamber through the jammed-open doors.
- 29Try using the retinal scan device next to the exit door.
- 30After the door opens, go through it to find a scientist reviving a security guard. (The guard cannot overcome nearby rubble, so taking them is not helpful.)
- 31Go around the corner and move forward slowly.
- 32After a computer bank falls over, go past it and jump over the debris in the corridor leading to the lift.
- 33Use the lift and go through the doors.
- 34Approach the two scientists and have the black scientist (Dr. Vance) follow you to the control room door's retinal scanner.
- 35After Dr. Vance opens the door, move far enough inside to see a large electrical surge shoot into the control room through the window on the right.
- 36Wait for the surge to blow up the door at the other end of the room.
- 37Carefully time your run across the room to avoid being zapped.
- 38In the next hallway, section c1a1 will load.
- 39In section c1a1, run through the next room and out its other door quickly, as a headcrab will teleport in.
- 40In the next hallway, crouch-walk under the first red laser beam.
- 41Run around the second laser beam after it breaks free from its pipe, near a dead security guard.
- 42Pick up the crowbar next to the nearby doors.
- 43Return to the room where the headcrab teleported in.
- 44Quicksave before entering the room.
- 45If the headcrab is levitating, go around the fallen pillar, approach the headcrab, and right-strafe at the last moment to dodge its leap.
- 46Quickly turn, run up to the headcrab, crouch, and use the crowbar to attack it before it can leap again.
- The HEV suit is essential for survival and allows you to use certain equipment.
- First aid stations restore health but make a distinct sound.
- Using the retinal scanner requires a specific scientist's retinal pattern.
- The test chamber involves a teleportation sequence.
- Be prepared for immediate threats like headcrabs after entering new areas.
- The crowbar is your first melee weapon.
- Dodging is crucial when facing enemies like headcrabs.
