Here's the lowdown: once you finish the very first major dungeon, you'll head to a new town. As you start to get settled in there, something will happen with the gauntlet runner (that's the main way you travel around, by the way). This event is what unlocks the fast travel mechanic for you. So, honestly, just playing the game is all you need to do!

Using fast travel is pretty simple once it's unlocked. First, open up your local map. You do this by pressing R1/RB. Once you're looking at the local map, press that same button again. This will switch you over to the world map. From there, you can select any location you've previously visited and warp to it instantly.
