In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, you'll sometimes encounter a mechanic referred to as "2x (4)". This isn't an official in-game term, but it's a shorthand used by players to describe a specific situation involving move power and critical hits.

Essentially, "2x (4)" refers to a move that has its base power doubled due to a specific condition, and then has that doubled power further multiplied by 4 due to a critical hit. This can lead to an enormous amount of damage!

How it Works

The "2x" part usually comes from a move's base power being doubled. For example, if a move has a base power of 40, and a condition doubles it to 80, that's the first part.

The "(4)" comes from critical hits. Normally, a critical hit deals 1.5x damage. However, in Diamond and Pearl, certain abilities or items can increase the critical hit ratio. If a Pokémon has an ability like 'Super Luck' or is holding a 'Scope Lens', their critical hit ratio is increased. When a critical hit lands under these boosted conditions, the damage multiplier can reach up to 4x the move's current power.

So, a move with a base power of 40, doubled to 80 by a condition, then critically hitting with a 4x multiplier, would deal a staggering 320 base power damage (80 * 4 = 320)!

When You Might See This

This combination is rare but devastating. You might see it when:

• Using moves with naturally high critical hit ratios (like Slash or Razor Leaf) combined with abilities that boost critical hits.
• Employing strategies that involve moves like "Focus Energy" to guarantee a critical hit, especially when paired with a critical-hit-boosting item like the "Scope Lens".

Be aware that your opponents can also use this to their advantage! If you see a Pokémon with abilities like "Super Luck" or holding a "Scope Lens", be extra cautious about using Pokémon with low defenses.
