Master Quake's player archetypes: Lurker, Pattern Runner, Frag-a-thoner, Sniper, Cautious Type, and Camper. Learn strategies to exploit their weaknesses and dominate matches.

This chapter discusses various player archetypes in Quake and how to exploit their weaknesses.

A. The Lurker

This player camps near valuable items (weapons, armor, health) and ambushes those who approach. They are often tough due to being well-supplied. If a lurker is in the lead, expect a difficult match. To defeat a lurker, lure another player into their area, then attack the lurker while they are distracted by the conflict. Alternatively, if you are being chased, lead your pursuer into the lurker's territory, then attack whichever opponent seems weaker. If you must face a lurker alone, gather health and armor, and use explosive weapons like the grenade launcher to attack from around corners. Switch to the Super/Nailgun for close-quarters combat, dodging missiles.

B. Pattern Runner

This player follows a set route around the level to collect items as they respawn. They can be very powerful if they have perfected their timing. To counter them, grab a key item in their cycle and defeat them before they can recover. If they are slightly off their timing, you can try to intercept them. A skilled pattern runner's timing is precise.

C. Frag-a-thoner

This player grabs the best weapon upon respawning and goes on a killing spree, acquiring better gear from fallen opponents. To defeat them, stalk them until they engage someone else, then attack them while they are distracted. Frag-a-thoners often neglect armor. If alone with one, lure them into a confined area where they cannot dodge, then unload your weapons.

D. Sniper

This player camps in a hard-to-reach spot and uses explosive weapons to attack from a distance. They are annoying but can be countered by ignoring them or waiting them out. They must eventually leave their perch for ammo. When they do, attack them with close-range weapons. Snipers typically have poor close-combat skills.

E. Cautious Type

Similar to a frag-a-thoner, but they retreat from battles when damaged to find health or armor. They are not usually difficult, but if you struggle, use the same tactics as against a frag-a-thoner: stalk and attack when they are engaged. To defeat one alone, feign weakness and lack of ammo, then turn a corner and surprise them with a rocket attack.

F. Camper

These players sit near deathmatch respawn points with a weapon, killing players as they reappear. They are usually easy to defeat because they are inattentive to their surroundings and do not actively hunt for opponents, armor, or ammo.
