[3-11] Messages

Learn about item messages and important mid-screen messages in Quake. Understand how they guide you through levels.

When you pick up items like ammo or guns in Quake, a sound plays and a message appears at the top of the screen (the HUD (heads-up display — the on-screen icons showing health, ammo and the minimap)). These messages simply confirm you acquired the object and can be ignored.

Other messages appear in the middle of the screen and are important. You should read these. On earlier levels, these messages help you learn Quake. On harder levels, fewer and more cryptic messages may appear.
