Learn about battles in Rogue Company, including how they start, the battle screen elements like the Action Gauge, and post-battle awards.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Battles initiate as random encounters. The battle commences immediately in real-time at your current location.
  2. 2
Upon defeating all enemies, you earn Experience Points, money, and potentially items. Members of the battle party also receive Skill Points.
  3. 3
Battle party members gain full EXP, while reserve members earn 70% EXP. Less EXP is awarded if your party's level is significantly higher than the enemies or if you've defeated many of that enemy type previously.
  4. 4
You can earn a 10% EXP bonus for a battle if your controlled character defeats more enemies than the rest of the party, excluding boss and challenge battles. This bonus is void if allies are instructed to "Step Back" or if you use an ability that defeats multiple enemies simultaneously.
  5. 5
Skill Points earned automatically improve the proficiency of equipped weapons. When a weapon's Skill Point bar is full, its skill level reaches MAX, enabling its use in Synthesis and further improving elemental attributes.
Tips
  • Skill Points automatically improve weapon proficiency and can be used for Synthesis when maxed out.
  • Earn bonus EXP by out-damaging your allies, but be mindful of the conditions that negate this bonus.
  • Reserve party members still gain a significant portion of EXP, so rotating members can be beneficial.

The Battle Screen:

The Battle Screen displays crucial information distinct from the overworld view.

  • Sub-Weapon Gauge: Located in the upper left, this gauge depletes with each Sub-Weapon attack. It gradually refills after use, but you cannot attack with the Sub-Weapon until it's fully reloaded. After three uses without a full refill, the Sub-Weapon becomes unusable for the remainder of the battle. Any remaining charge carries over to the next battle.
  • Team Commands: The icon in the top center indicates your party's current strategy, which can be altered via the Battle Menu.
  • Party Status: The bottom of the screen shows portraits of your battle party, their current HP (Health Points), AP (Ability Points), and any active status effects.
  • Action Gauge: This segmented blue bar above each party member's portrait depletes with every attack (hit or miss). When empty, an (!) appears, preventing further attacks until the gauge refills. Successfully defending an enemy attack with Guard fully restores the Action Gauge. It also automatically restores after battle.
  • Battle Map: The minimap (a small map displayed on the HUD (heads-up display — the on-screen icons showing health, ammo and the minimap)) in the lower right shows your immediate surroundings. Enemies appear in red, and party members in blue.

Battle Actions:

A variety of actions are available during combat:

  • Move: Control your character's movement on the battlefield.
  • Target Lock: Press a button to toggle Target Lock on or off. When active, you can cycle through enemies using a different button.
  • Main Weapon: Attack with your primary weapon. You can chain attacks by repeatedly pressing the attack button. A Down Attack can be performed on grounded enemies. Facing an object and attacking can cause it to knock back and damage enemies. Holding the attack button allows for a Charge Attack.
  • Sub-Weapon: Use your secondary weapon by pressing a specific button.
  • Jump: Use a button to jump, allowing you to clear obstacles or reach higher enemies. Performing an attack in mid-air results in a Jump-Attack. Jumping away from a locked target performs a backflip.
  • Guard: Hold a button to defend against enemy attacks.
  • Lift/Throw: While guarding, press another button to lift an object or enemy, then press the attack button to throw it.
  • Escape: Move far enough away from the enemy spawn point to escape some battles, though escape is not always possible.

The Battle Menu:

Pressing a specific button during battle opens the Battle Menu, allowing access to various options:

  • Abilities: Use learned abilities, consuming AP. You can also select other party members to use their abilities. AP can be replenished with Recharge Drinks or Elixirs.
  • Change Equipment: Access the character status screen to change equipped items.
  • Use Items: Select and use items from your inventory. You can also have other party members use items.
  • Switch Characters: Take control of another battle party member, provided they are not unconscious.
  • Other Battle Menu Options: Pressing another button from the Battle Menu opens the Main Menu. You can change Team Commands here as well. Camera angles can be adjusted using specific buttons.
