The Merchant is a Hoshidan class, and its whole deal is about trading and making money, but it can still defend itself with bows and lances. Here's a look at its stats and how they grow:

As you can see, the Merchant isn't exactly a powerhouse in terms of raw stats. Its growths are pretty low across the board, especially in Speed and Resistance. However, it does get access to two bows and lances, so it's not completely defenseless.

Where the Merchant really shines, or at least becomes interesting, is with its unique skills:

The real strategy here is combining Profiteer and Spendthrift. Profiteer gives you a chance to get Gold Bars just by ending your turn, and then Spendthrift lets you use those Gold Bars to boost your damage and defense in combat.
