Learn type match-ups in pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl. Understand super effective, not very effective, and no effect damage multipliers.
Each Pokémon in pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl has one or two Types, visible in the Pokémon menu or Pokédex. There are 18 Types in total, such as Normal, Fire, Water, Grass, Dark, Steel, and Fairy. These Types generally reflect a Pokémon's characteristics. For example, a boulder-like Pokémon is likely Rock-type.
Every move also belongs to one of these 18 Types. A move like “Thundershock” is Electric-type. Pokémon can learn moves matching their own Type(s) or moves of other Types.
Interactions:
Certain Types are stronger or weaker against others. Water-type moves are strong against Fire-type Pokémon, while Fire-type moves are weak against Water-type Pokémon.
If a move is strong against a Pokémon's Type, it deals “super-effective” damage, which is double the normal amount. If a move is weak, it deals “not very effective” damage, which is half the normal amount. Moves can also have “no effect”, resulting in zero damage. Knowing these match-ups is essential for successful battling.
Our Handy Match-Up Chart:
With 18 Types, there are 324 possible combinations. Roughly half of these result in neutral damage (standard amount). To help you memorize the over a hundred significant interactions, a chart is available that shows all Type interactions. For beginners, it's recommended to start by learning the match-ups for Fire, Water, and Grass Types.
Dual-Type Pokémon:
When facing a Pokémon with two Types, calculate the damage multipliers individually and then multiply them together. For instance, a Water and Flying-type Pelipper takes 2x damage from Grass against its Water typing, but 0.5x damage against its Flying typing. Multiplying these (2 x 0.5) results in 1x neutral damage for Grass-type moves against Pelipper. However, an Electric-type move deals 2x damage to Water and 2x damage to Flying, resulting in a massive 4x damage against Pelipper (2 x 2).
Other Factors:
While the Type Match-Up chart is generally sufficient, other factors can influence battle outcomes. Pokémon Abilities and held items are important. The Levitate Ability grants immunity to Ground-type moves. The Dry Skin Ability makes a Pokémon immune to Water-type moves. Normally, Normal and Fighting moves are ineffective against Ghost-types, but the Scrappy Ability allows these moves to hit Ghost-types. The moves Foresight and Odour Sleuth have a similar effect.
