Learn how to level up troops in Valkyria Chronicles by dividing XP from missions and playing skirmish battles. Unlock elite units at level 11.
Walkthrough
- 1Divide XP gained from each mission among your troop types. All troops of the same type level up together.
- 2Aim for a balanced leveling scheme, ensuring no troop type is more than 1 level higher than any other.
- 3Consider upgrading Shocktroopers and Scouts first, but this is ultimately your choice.
- 4Play through skirmish battles at least once, preferably twice, each time they become available. Avoid playing them excessively as later missions offer more XP.
- 5As a general rule, try to keep your unit levels around the same number as the current chapter number (e.g., level 11 by chapter 11).
- 6After completing Chapter 10, play Skirmish map 5 enough to reach at least level 11 for all troop types before starting Chapter 11.
- 7After Chapter 14, use the easier and faster Skirmish map 7 to easily reach level 15 with all troops.
Tips
- A balanced leveling approach ensures you are strong enough for subsequent challenges.
- Getting an A rank for every map can help pace the game well without excessive grinding.
- Playing skirmish battles more than twice each time they become available is less useful due to diminishing XP returns compared to story missions.
Elite Units:
Once your troops reach level 11, they will upgrade to elite status, gaining stat boosts.
- Scouts: Gain grenade launchers that use their normal grenades, increasing range and arc. You can still throw grenades normally.
- Shocktroopers: Gain access to flamethrowers, which are effective against bunkers, groups of enemies, and enemies behind sandbags. Be cautious as flamethrower use can leave you vulnerable to counterattacks. Flamethrower upgrades can also be purchased in R&D.
- Lancers: Gain the ability to use a mortar lance (requires a different load-out) later in the game through research.
- Snipers and Engineers: Do not gain new weapon options upon reaching elite status.
