The Auction House (AH) in World of Warcraft: Midnight is a player-driven marketplace where you can buy and sell items. Understanding its mechanics is crucial for acquiring better gear and making gold.

Buying:

Use the tabs to narrow your search by level range, item name, or by shift-clicking an item you possess. You have two main options:

  • Bid: Enter a bid amount. The item goes to the highest bidder when time expires. Shorter timers increase your chances of winning if the item isn't in high demand.
  • Buyout: Pay a set price to acquire the item instantly. This is typically higher than the starting bid.

You can track your bids under the 'Bidding On' tab. Note that bids cannot be canceled. Won items are sent directly to your mailbox.

Gear Considerations:

  • Avoid buying gear that is only three or more levels below your current level to save gold.
  • Prioritize blue-quality items over green-quality items, as they often offer better stats for a slightly higher price. Avoid paying over 20 gold for a green item.
  • Be cautious around 'Twink Gear' levels (19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 80), as these items are highly sought after for battlegrounds and can be expensive. If you find such gear cheaply, consider reselling it.
  • Refrain from buying new gear at levels 56-60 and 66-70, as your initial quests in Outland and Northrend will provide better equipment. If you must buy, ensure it's from the next expansion's tier.
  • Research dungeon quest rewards online, as they might be a better alternative to purchasing gear.

Selling:

Selling effectively requires strategy. Approximately 50% of items listed may not sell.

  • Deposit Fee: All items require a deposit fee to list, which is not refunded if the item doesn't sell. This fee is substantial for high-level gear. While early in the game these fees are manageable, they can become a significant cost later on. If an item sells, the deposit is returned, but the AH takes a commission.
  • Starting Bid: Do not set your starting bid lower than the default. Consider vendoring items if the market price is already lower. Rounding up to the next gold amount is advisable.
  • Buyout Price: Set a reasonable buyout price close to your starting bid for a quick sale. Increase it if the item is in high demand with low supply, or significantly higher if it's a rare 'twink' item or the only one on the market. You can also choose not to set a buyout and let players bid.
  • Undercutting: Undercutting by a few silver is acceptable, but excessive undercutting can devalue the item for everyone. Undercutting by just 1 copper is considered poor practice.
  • Know Your Audience: Understand which classes use specific gear. Many low-level characters are actually high-level players looking for specific gear, allowing for higher buyout prices on certain items.
  • Materials ('Mats'): These are consistently in demand and usually sell unless overpriced. You don't always need to be the lowest price for mats due to consistent demand. Deposit fees for materials are typically low.
