Explore the diverse abilities of Hunters in World of Warcraft, from powerful shots and stings to strategic traps, aspects, and tracking. Learn how to maximize your damage and control the battlefield.
Ranged attacks in World of Warcraft require at least 5 yards of distance. Shots and stings can be fired while moving.
Stings
Only one of each sting can be active. While Serpent Sting is frequently used, the effectiveness of other stings depends on knowing your opponent.
Shots
Early on, Arcane Shot is your primary source of instant damage. All shots deal damage, and Aimed Shot can be acquired through talents. Concussive Shot is useful against most enemies, particularly for drawing aggro away from your pet or slowing fleeing targets. Some shots share cooldowns.
Traps
The appropriate trap depends on the enemy. Ice Trap is effective for crowd control (CC). Snake Trap can apply poisons to nearby enemies. Fire traps deal significant damage but share a cooldown with Survival Hunters' Black Arrow. A recent patch allows for one of each trap (Ice, Snake, Fire) to be active simultaneously.
Aspects
Aspects are frequently changed and can be bound to number keys. Hawk Aspect is the default. Viper Aspect restores mana. Beast Aspect is for finishing off close enemies. Monkey Aspect aids in avoiding attacks. Cheetah Aspect increases movement speed when not in combat. Dragonhawk Aspect combines Hawk and Monkey aspects for level 80 players. A common rotation involves using Dragonhawk while attacking, switching to Viper to regain mana, and then back to Dragonhawk before the next attack. Tracking, if talented, should become second nature alongside aspect juggling.
Tracking
A Survival talent provides a minor bonus when tracking the type of enemy you are attacking. Otherwise, tracking is primarily used to identify enemy types. If you have the talent, check the tooltip for bosses to maximize damage per second (DPS). Track Hidden can be useful in PvP, though Ice Trap or Flare may offer similar utility.
Misdirection
A potent raiding tool for level 70+, Misdirection allows for 3 free attacks to redirect aggro to a target. It can even target your pet, enabling a respec into a pure DPS specialization.
Multi-Shot/Aimed Shot
These abilities share the same cooldown. Multi-Shot is used against multiple enemies, while Aimed Shot is for single targets. Aimed Shot is a talent ability, but all Hunters should aim to acquire it; otherwise, use Multi-Shot consistently.
Volley
Volley is a powerful Area of Effect (AoE) attack, especially when enhanced by the Marksmanship tree. It is recommended to use Misdirection before casting Volley.
Deterrence, Feign Death, Disengage
These abilities are used for evasion and crowd control. Feign Death can act as an aggro dump on raid bosses.
