Learn World of Warcraft Rogue PvP tactics, focusing on the Subtlety spec for survivability and escape. Understand how to engage casters and avoid plate wearers.

Rogues are the biggest target in PvP. If you are spotted, everyone will try to kill you. The only true PvP rogue spec is subtlety, which increases the duration and reduces the cooldowns of a rogue's tricks. Subtlety is the only spec that allows you any chance to escape being pinned down and mobbed.

Rogues can only target casters in big fights. Rogues have NO chance being the main target of a full-health plate-wearer (a heavily armored player). When engaging casters they will immediately burn their escape ability. Warlocks (Locks) will send you running away and apply damage over time (DoT) effects, same with Priests, and Mages will most likely freeze, blink (a short-range teleport), and frostbolt you. A rogue can only free themselves and either vanish (become invisible) or sprint (increase movement speed) to cover (a defensive position) the distance.

If there is a line of enemy casters and a single rogue pops up on one of them, the entire line will target the rogue, and even nearby non-casters will want a piece of a rogue. So aside from suicidal decoys, rogues are best left for single combat against anything but a plate-wearer. Rogues really are just a suicide class because without healing they will die in big combat, always.

Hunters are the best at finding rogues, both with the ability to track hidden (reveal stealthed players) and with flares – to a lesser extent traps, but rogues in stealth can easily disarm these. Other than that, the only way to find a rogue is to use area of effect (AoE) abilities, the only thing that spells instant death to a rogue.

Tips
  • Focus on casters in large fights; avoid engaging heavily armored players (plate-wearers).
  • Use your escape abilities like Vanish and Sprint strategically to reposition or break line of sight.
  • Be aware that Hunters have abilities specifically designed to detect Rogues.
  • Area of Effect (AoE) abilities are extremely dangerous to Rogues.
