Learn the basics of World of Warcraft battlegrounds like Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin. Discover strategies for offense, defense, and capturing objectives.
The key to all combat maps in World of Warcraft is defense. While offense can win in Warsong Gulch, it's risky. There are currently 5 battlegrounds and one battle zone that open up as you level. You can trade marks for items at these locations. Entry points to battlegrounds include the zone they are based in, battle terraces in cities, or the player vs player tab on your toolbar.
Warsong Gulch
- Min Level: 10
- Team size: 10
- Time Limit: 25 minutes
- Objective: Capture the flag three times
Warsong Gulch is the smallest and most competitive map. Strategies include half offense/half defense, 3 on defense/7 on offense, or middle control. Playing Horde is often easier due to 'twinking' (players at lower levels with superior gear) and the Blood Elf Paladin's ability to solo-cap flags. Offense requires breaking through enemy defense, often by clearing the flag room first or using decoys to lure defenders away. Defense focuses on staying within the flag room, avoiding attacks from roofs or ledges, and setting traps. If the flag carrier leaves the flag room, defenders have a limited distance to intercept. To recapture a flag, focus on slowing the flag carrier and damaging their healers. As the flag carrier, you cannot stealth or mount, and teammates must help you escape the enemy keep. Hiding spots include the graveyard, roof, ramp, or within the flag room itself.
Arathi Basin
- Min Level: 20
- Team size: 15
- Objective: Control nodes until you amass 1600 points
Arathi Basin is a balanced battleground where one player cannot solely determine the outcome. There are five nodes; controlling three is usually sufficient to win, while controlling four or five leads to rapid victories. Nodes generate points over time when uncontested. Offense can involve single-player caps of undefended nodes, with Rogues and Druids excelling at stealth caps. Attacking a node can draw enemies away, and luring them is a viable tactic. Attacking from multiple sides can also be effective. Defense involves assigning players to uncontested flags and heavily defending key nodes.
