You unlock Materia Fusion by progressing the story to Chapter 3. At the beginning of this chapter, Zack is promoted to Soldier 1st Class, granting him access to this system. Later, in Chapter 5 onwards, you can obtain an Item Fusion Tome that allows for item affixing during fusion to add stat bonuses. This tome becomes available after completing the second mission in the “Seeking Priceless Items” category.

Materia Fusion is an in-depth system with several key components:

Materia Types

There are four main types of Materia, each associated with a color:

Magic Materia (Green): These Materia are magic-based, such as Fire and Blizzard, and consume MP.
Command Materia (Yellow): These Materia are attack-based, like Assault Twister, and consume AP.
Special Materia: These Materia enhance your attributes, including HP UP and ATK UP.
Support Materia: These Materia provide benefits to other equipped Materia, though some function independently.

Materia Ranks

Materia have five ranks, from one star to Master. Higher ranks offer better stats. Materia can be leveled up through the DMW (Digital Mind Wave) if it displays two or three of the same number (e.g., 444 levels Materia in Slot 4 twice). Other leveling methods include the Moogle Summon, where Materia levels up in relation to the Summon's level.

Materia Classes

Materia Classes are subcategories within each Materia Type. For example, Magic Materia has classes like Fire, Ice, and Thunder. Each class contains specific Materia; the Ice class includes Blizzard, Blizzara, and Blizzaga, while the Fire class includes Fire, Fira, and Firaga.

Materia Fusion Combinations

To fuse Materia, access the Materia Fusion Menu from the main menu. Experiment with combinations using accumulated SP. Higher-level Materia fusion is more costly, but SP is readily available. Below are some example combinations:
