Learn how to find and defeat the Jotunn in Octopath Traveler's 'The Slumbering Giant' side story. Get tips on weaknesses, strategies, and rewards.
Walkthrough
- 1You can start 'The Slumbering Giant' after completing Ophilia's Chapter 1, but it's best to wait a bit since it involves a Danger Level 25 dungeon. First, find the Diligent Student inside the tavern in Flamesgrace. They're convinced the jotunn is real!
- 2Next, you need to get the information 'Where the Ice Giant Sleeps'. To do this, head to the base of the hill used in Ophilia's first chapter and use Inquire or Scrutinize on the Muttering Codger.
- 3Once you have the info, it's time to journey to Hoarfrost Grotto, located in Western Flamesgrace Wilds. If you've already discovered this area, traveling from S'warkii might be quicker. Follow the trail east from North S'warkii Trail into Western Flamesgrace Wilds. The cave entrance is just northeast of the save point.
- 4Head into the opening north of the save point, and you'll come face-to-face with the Jotunn.
Boss Fight: Jotunn
Stats / Weaknesses:
- Jotunn: Weak to Swords, Axes, Fire, Lightning. Has 4 shields initially, can increase up to 8.
- Snow Elementals (Summoned): Weak to Daggers, Staves, Fire, Light. Have 4 shields and around 8,000 HP.
Phases:
- Initial Encounter: The Jotunn starts alone with 4 shields. On its first turn, it summons two Snow Elementals. These elementals can use 'Icicle' (single target) and 'Icewind' (party hit).
- Mid-Fight: After breaking the Jotunn's shields, it recovers and gains 2 additional shields. This can happen twice, meaning it can have up to 8 shields.
- Ultimate Move: When the Jotunn reaches half health, it will announce its ultimate move with the message 'a chill is in the air' and a dark aura. On its next turn, it uses Absolute Zero, which reduces everyone's HP to 1.
Strategy:
- Focus on breaking the Jotunn's shields quickly. Use your party members' strengths – swords, axes, fire, and lightning are your best bets.
- Deal with the summoned Snow Elementals efficiently. They are weak to daggers, staves, fire, and light. Don't let them overwhelm you or chip away at your party's health.
- Crucially, prepare for 'Absolute Zero'. When the Jotunn signals this move, you need to be ready. Either have a strong healer ready to restore HP immediately, or try to break its shields *before* it can unleash Absolute Zero. Having a Healing Grape Bunch can be a lifesaver here.
- Once you get past the half-health mark and survive Absolute Zero, the Jotunn should be much easier to defeat.
- Upon defeating the Jotunn, you'll receive the Jotunn Horn, a key item. Return to Flamesgrace and give this to the Diligent Student in the tavern to complete the side story. You'll also receive 4,500 Leaves and a Calamity Spear.
