Learn how to summon Roach, control horse speeds (walk, canter, gallop), use autopilot on roads, manage stamina, and avoid spooking your horse in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you can summon your trusty steed, Roach, anytime on the world map. Riding Roach is significantly faster than Geralt's walking pace. For a change of pace, you can use Geralt's AXII sign on wild horses to tame and ride them temporarily.
The horse offers three speeds:
- Walking: The slowest but most maneuverable speed.
- Canter: Hold the run button for a faster pace.
- Gallop: Tap and then hold the run button for the fastest speed.
Horses feature an autopilot function. While on a road, hold the run button to canter without touching directional sticks, and the horse will automatically follow the road. Be aware that it may not always choose the desired path at intersections.
A Stamina meter appears at the bottom of the screen while riding. Galloping consumes stamina, and once depleted, the horse will revert to a walk until stamina recharges. Equipping different saddles can increase Roach's maximum stamina.
Horses also have a spook meter. Getting too close to enemies on horseback without escaping quickly can cause the horse to spook, throwing Geralt to the ground. It's advisable to avoid enemies while mounted.
