Walkthrough for Chapter 3: Power of the Luminary in Dragon Quest XI S, covering Heliodorian Foothills and Downtown Heliodor, including enemies, items, and quests.
You awake in a room in a church in the Heliodorian Foothills. If this is your first playthrough, you will earn the Close Call trophy. After smashing a couple of pots, leave your room and have a chat with the nun for a scene. Exit the church for another scene after which Erik will join your party.
Talk to the nearby soldier in red armour who will give you the quest It Takes Two To Tango. When you use the Real Decoy pep power on an enemy, return to him to receive a Gold Chain accessory. Go behind the church to find a couple of barrels to smash.
Now go down the well to find yourself in a chamber with three passageways. The southern passage leads to some minor loot; the eastern passage leads to a Sparkly Spot while the northern one leads to a chest containing a pointy hat. Return to the surface and make your way out into the foothills proper.
Enemies (Heliodorian Foothills)
- Bodkin Archer
- Fright Bulb
- Stump Chump
- Great Sabrecub
- Lampling
- Platypunk
- Funghoul
- Great Sabrecat
Bodkin Archer enemies have a habit of calling for backup which can work to your advantage, since you can easily kill one every turn. The Funghoul has a breath attack that can inflict the sleep status so you should make killing them a priority. While the Great Sabrecubs are a pushover, the same can't be said for the Great Sabrecats which can kill your character in 3-4 hits. Fortunately, their range is restricted to the small island in the far west of the map so they shouldn't be a bother. You should be able to get to level 9-10 without too much grinding.
Your destination is Downtown Heliodor in the north east, but there are a number of points of interest in the area before you go there. In the far west of the area is a treasure chest containing a SEED OF STRENGTH. The eastern corner of the large central region holds a chest containing a RED EYE (a rare crafting material).
When you're done exploring, turn in the quest at the church (assuming you've met the conditions; if you haven't just fight enemies until both you and Erik are in the pep state and then select the Real Decoy pep ability from the battle menu) and take the northeastern exit to Downtown Heliodor. Note that although the map shows an exit to The Manglegrove in the south west, Erik won't actually let you go that way.
Downtown Heliodor
After the scene, you'll find yourself at the western end of the area, next to the inn. You can rest for 10G if you want to. Go inside for a couple of breakable containers. Just to the east is a church where you can save your game. There are a couple of dwellings nearby, although they don't have anything interesting in them. However, you can clamber onto a platform nearby for some meagre loot. There are also a couple of breakable pots next to the item seller's and some barrels opposite the weapon shop. Climb the ladder against the southern wall. This takes you to a platform with a couple of breakable barrels. Take a second ladder up to a row of dwellings where you can find some minor loot. At the end of the walkway is a ledge built into the wall. Cross it and then cross the tightrope to the other side for some minor loot. Use the tightrope to get back to the other side and drop down to a ledge where you'll find a chest containing a Drasilian Guinea (which you can sell for 500G).
Drop back down to ground level. Opposite the ladder you just climbed is a platform that you can climb onto. Use the ladder to get to the upper level and then cross a tightrope to find a chest containing a SEED OF AGILITY.
In the eastern side of the area, you may want to visit the armourer to upgrade Erik's armour. If you talk to Mistress Bev, the fortune teller in the hut on the opposite side, don't buy the item from her since it is simply overpriced holy water. Opposite her and slightly further to the east is a substantial inn with a couple of breakable pots upstairs. If you continue east, you will pass a Magic Key door that you are unable to open and the guarded entrance to Heliodor itself. At the easternmost point of the area is a guard tower that you can ignore for the moment.
When you're done exploring, examine the rubbish tip in the centre of the area. It seems that Erik's erstwhile partner, Derk, has taken the valuable orb that was hidden here. Make your way to the inn in the east of the area for a brief scene. Now go the guard tower, climb the ladder to the upper level for a scene. Head back down for another scene with Erik. Return to the inn and talk to Ruby, the woman at the desk, to learn Derk's whereabouts.
To gain access to Heliodor proper, you'll need to get past the guard. Return to the watchtower and climb back up the ladder. You can now get across the footbridge. Cross the wooden platform here, grabbing some minor loot on the way, make your way over the ledge and use the tightrope to cross to the other side. Crawl under the dwelling, climb the ladder and help yourself to some minor loot from the breakable pots. At the end of the platform is a chest containing a pair of Boxer Shorts. Talk to the little boy who will tell you something interesting about Ruby.
Return to the inn and get Ruby to forge a letter from Roxy, the dancer. Give this love letter to the guard and he'll abandon his post. Or, if that seems like rather a lot of bother, talk to the little girl with the dog. She'll want holy water and buzzberries to let you borrow it. You can buy Holy Water from the item shop and get buzzberries from a Sparkly Spot in the Heliodor foothills if you don't already have them. Give the items to the girl. Now walk over to the guard with the dog in tow and he'll run away.
