Exploration - The World Ocean

Explore the World Ocean in Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, detailing islands like Insula Incognita, Insula Orientalis, and Insula Borealis.

This guide assumes that you are sailing anti-clockwise around the continent starting from The Strand.

Insula Incognita

This island is a short distance south of The Strand. It is notable for the Sparkly Spot in the centre of the island that yields Yggdrasil Leaves. The two parts of the island are separated by a natural arch. You can climb up the left hand side of it and make your way across to find a chest containing the recipe book 'Crafting Comforting Clothing'. The eastern half of the island has a tower with an Ultimate Key door.

• Enemies: Hammerhood, Brownie, Troll, Cyclops

Insula Orientalis

As its name suggests, this island is all the way over to the east side of the continent. Look for a crossbow target perched on the rocks in the north east of the island. Make your way to the northern tip to find a chest containing a SLIME CROWN. The west of the island has a tower with an Ultimate Key door.

• Enemies: Healslime, Bite Bulb, Slime Knight, Snooty Slime Knight, Metal Slime, Shell Slime, Amalgoomated Slime, King Slime, Drake Slime, Liquid Metal Slime
• Tips: King Slimes are not to be underestimated - avoid them if you're currently low level. Very occasionally, they'll be joined by a Liquid Metal Slime which is worth a whopping 10000 XP. Jade's Thunder Thrust (or Lightning Thrust) abilities will help take it down before it flees.

Insula Borealis

This island is found to the north of the continent. The crossbow target is found underneath the bridge that connects the two halves of the island.

• Enemies: Man o'War, Coralossus, Killer Kriller

Viking Hideout

Look for the man walking around the docks area. There is a barrel nearby containing a MINI MEDAL. Go into the tunnel to find some more breakable barrels, one of which contains a PINK PEARL. Make your way through the double doors to enter the hideout proper. There's a locked grille here.

Sniflheim Region (Northern Spur)

Continue north to the open area. There's a Bodkin Archer here. Hop down the well. The northern path leads to nothing interesting. The eastern path leads to a Sparkly Spot while the eastern one leads to a bed where you can rest. Back outside, the door leading north is currently locked, so head to the eastern tip to find a crossbow target (1/5). Return to the ship and continue south. Ignore Sniflheim for the time being as you'll come here as part of the main quest.

Insula Algarum

This island is some distance south east of Sniflheim. Go to the eastern side of the southern island to find a chest containing a LUCIDA SHARD. Go to the southern tip to find a crossbow target high on a rocky outcrop.

• Enemies: Hades Condor, War Gryphon, Raven Lunatic, Pteranodon
• Tips: Pteranodons can cast Whack (instant death) so prioritise them; Jade's Harvest Moon ability is ideal. War Gryphons have a powerful breath attack.

Insula Occidentalis

This island is just to the north of The Strand. There's not a whole lot to see here; a tower with a Magic Key door, a tower with an Ultimate Key door and a hut where you can sleep. By the side of the hut is a barrel with 200G and inside is a Bodkin Archer. Return here when you've hit all the crossbow targets in the islands and he will give you 4 PEP PIPS.

• Enemies: Jowler, Spiked Hare, Orc, Medislime, 24-Carrot Bunicorn
• Tips: Jowlers are big and tough. They're beast enemies which means that Jade can make good use of her Cattle Prod ability. The 24-Carrot Bunicorn is the rarefied form of the Spiked Hare and is occasionally encountered alongside its regular kin. Like other rarefied enemies, it's a boss level foe in a small package.

Insula Centralis

This island is only accessible once you've acquired Lorelei's Harp after the events in Lonalulu. Use the vortex in the north east ocean to access this section of the inland sea. Assuming that you've visited all the other islands, you will unlock the Island Hopper trophy. There's a chest close to the shore with a MINI MEDAL. There's a tower with a Magic Key door at the eastern tip of the island. This is also where you'll find the crossbow target for this island, up on some rocks. Assuming that this is the last of the island crossbow targets, you can Zoom to The Strand and sail the short distance to Insula Occidentalis to claim your prize.
