Learn how to conquer Humankind on the highest difficulty! Discover strategies for early game survival, trade, culture selection, and scaling to victory.

Hey there! So you're looking to tackle Humankind on the toughest setting, huh? That's awesome! This guide is all about helping you get those Era Stars and beat the game on Humankind difficulty. I've played a ton of 4X games, and Humankind has some really cool stuff going for it. I've managed to beat it on the hardest setting a few times, and I want to share what I learned. Keep in mind, the game's still pretty new when this is written, so some things might change with updates!

Humankind Difficulty and General Strategy

Alright, let's break down what makes Humankind difficulty so brutal and how you can fight back. The AI gets some pretty sweet bonuses, but here's the lowdown:

  • AI Bonuses: You don't get any penalties yourself, but the AI gets a boost in several areas: +3 Food per Farmer, +3 Industry per Worker, +3 Money per Trader, +3 Science per Researcher, +60 Stability, and +2 Combat Strength for all their units.

Now, those FIMS (Food, Industry, Money, Science) bonuses might sound huge, and they are early on. But here's the trick: they're flat bonuses. This means they don't scale as well as you'd think later in the game. For example, an early city with 9 population and 3 workers getting +9 Industry is a big deal. But a massive late-game AI city with 60 population and 15 workers getting +45 Industry? That's much easier to overcome with just one or two specialized districts.

The +2 Combat Strength bonus is no joke, though. It's like giving them a free upgrade on every unit, making early combat almost impossible to win. You'll want to avoid fighting until at least the Classical or Medieval era. Later on, picking the Professional Soldiers Civic and leaning towards the Homeland ideology can help balance this out.

The stability bonus is a bit harder to pin down, but it likely decreases in importance as you get more ways to boost stability yourself, especially through trading for luxury resources.

So, what's the game plan?

  1. Avoid Early Wars: Seriously, don't pick fights until the Classical era, or even later if you can help it.
  2. Trade for Luxuries: Get those trade routes going to snag luxury resources. They're key for stability.
  3. Culture Picks: Start with Agrarian and Builder cultures. These help you scale up early. Focus on building wide (lots of cities) rather than tall (one big city) to make the most of those scaling bonuses.
  4. Aim for Stars: The ultimate goal is to rack up as many Era Stars as possible. Remember, the game is won by accumulating Fame!

Basically, survive the early game, build up your economy and infrastructure, and then leverage your growing empire to outpace the AI in Fame generation as their bonuses become less impactful.
