Navigate the 'Long Distance' quest in The Outer Worlds with our comprehensive walkthrough. Learn about bugging terminals, meeting Adjutant Akande, and Muting Monarch.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Bugging the Communications Terminal: In Phineas' lab, head to the communications terminal west of his enclosure and select either [Send Tracking Signal] or [Send Corrupted Tracking Signal]. The latter option, suggested by Phineas, convinces Akande of your loyalty while buying Phineas time. This decision does not affect your ability to side with either Phineas or Akande later in the main questline.
  2. 2
Meeting Adjutant Akande: Depending on your story progression, you will be invited to meet Akande in Byzantium. If you haven't completed The City and the Stars, you'll be directed to her Landing Pad. If you have completed it, you'll gain access to her Landing Pad.
  3. 3
Navigating to Akande's Office: From the Landing Pad, head west through a doorway to the HHC Building. Pass a checkpoint, continue west, and go through another door to find vending machines. Take the elevator south to the third floor.
  4. 4
Speaking with Akande: On the third floor, proceed east of Percival Platt's desk to find Adjutant Akande. She will question your motivations for turning in Phineas.
  5. 5
Muting Monarch (Board Questline): If you've completed Balance Due, The Puppet Masters, and The Demolished Woman, Akande will task you with shutting down broadcasts on Monarch. Travel to Devil's Peak Station. She suggests speaking with her agent, Everett Gill, in Stellar Bay, using the passphrase “the kindapine grows at night”. After this, talk to Platt for your reward and the Stellar Bay Navkey. This ends the Long Distance quest and allows you to proceed with Signal Point in Space. You can also acquire unique weapons Pauper Popper and Latinus from Platt.
  6. 6
Alternative Path (After The City and the Stars): If you've completed The City and the Stars, you'll proceed with the section titled “Downsizing the Workforce”, which may vary based on prior actions.
  7. 7
Stellar Bay Navkey: If you haven't purchased the Stellar Bay Navkey from Gladys for the Passage to Anywhere quest, this is your last chance. Not buying it saves 10,000 Bits and does not fail the quest. You can inform Phineas on the Unreliable that you have a Stellar Bay Navkey.
  8. 8
Radio Free Monarch: Phineas will instruct you to find Hiram Blythe on Monarch for information, initiating the quest Radio Free Monarch. This quest progresses similarly to Signal Point in Space, and both will update simultaneously.
Tips
  • The decision about the tracking signal is inconsequential to your final allegiance.
  • The Stellar Bay Navkey can be obtained through this quest, saving you 10,000 Bits if you haven't bought it from Gladys.
  • Completing objectives for both Akande and Phineas is possible without compromising your relationships.
