Learn essential Unreal Tournament combat tactics, including advanced movement techniques like dodging and jumping, and how to counter both human opponents and bots effectively.

This section covers important settings and advanced combat techniques for Unreal Tournament. It details how to customize your crosshair, player skins, and weapon preferences, along with crucial movement strategies for survival and engagement.

Crosshair Customization:

You can customize your crosshair for better aiming. Many custom crosshairs are available online and are easy to install. Ensure your crosshair settings are not affected by handedness options.

Player Setup:

Navigate to Options > Player Setup to change your character's appearance. While mostly cosmetic, female skins are narrower than male skins, offering smaller hurtboxes that can make them harder to hit, potentially providing an advantage online.

Weapon Preferences:

Under Options > Weapons, you can set your preferred weapon order. This influences two features:

  • Auto-Switch Weapons: This feature, which is recommended to disable, automatically switches to a newly picked-up weapon if it's higher on your preference list than your current weapon. This can lead to unwanted weapon swaps, especially if picking up a weapon accidentally.
  • 'Best Weapon' Key: Assigning a key for this function brings up your preferred weapon list. Avoid placing the Redeemer at the top of this list to prevent accidental self-damage. Weapons that can cause self-harm should be placed lower.

Refer to section 3.1.2 for a bind to toggle between specific weapons.

Movement and Combat (2.2 MOVEMENT AND COMBAT):

The fundamental rule in UT combat is to Keep Moving. Practicing your dodging is strongly recommended, especially for online play, as skilled players incorporate it into their movement and combat. Standing still is generally detrimental, as is running in straight lines. Combine running, dodging, jumping, and crouching for unpredictable movement.

Against Human Opponents:

Consistent movement, including dodging, crouching, and jumping, makes it difficult for human players to aim precisely at you. They compensate by shooting at the space you occupy, hoping to land hits. The more unpredictable your movement, the more space they must account for, though your own aim can be affected. Practice is key to balancing movement and aiming.

Against Bots:

Bots, especially on higher difficulties, possess aimbot capabilities, allowing them to hit you with perfect accuracy from any angle or range. This is particularly dangerous with projectile weapons, as they can predict your movement, and with hit-scan weapons like the Enforcer, Shock Rifle, Minigun, and Sniper Rifle, which offer no avoidance through movement alone. The primary counter to bots is using cover, as they typically won't shoot if they cannot see you. Unlike humans, they generally do not spam or shoot preemptively.

Counter-Intuitive Bot Strategy:

An unusual but effective tactic against bots with aimbots is to stand still. While counter-intuitive, this can cause a significant number of their shots to miss, allowing you to land precise attacks like a standing shock-combo.

Forward Dodging:

Online players frequently use forward flips, which are forward-dodges. This is the fastest way to move forward while evading fire. To perform a forward-dodge while running forward: release your forward key simultaneously as you press and hold your left or right strafe key. Immediately after, while holding the strafe key, double-tap the forward key, holding it on the second tap to continue moving forward. You can then release the strafe key. Practice this sequence until it becomes muscle memory.

Crouching for Aiming:

When shooting at a distance, crouching can improve stability, especially when on ledges, as it prevents you from accidentally walking off and makes you harder to headshot.
