The Gauntlets section of Pathways into Darkness focuses on the core gameplay mechanics of combat and item management within the alien pyramid. Players will need to navigate treacherous environments, battle a variety of monsters, and solve intricate puzzles. Effective use of limited resources, such as ammunition and health potions, is crucial for survival. The game blends first-person shooter elements with RPG conventions and survival horror aspects, requiring strategic thinking rather than pure aggression.

Gameplay Mechanics:

• Combat: Players must fight various monsters, but cannot simply 'run and gun'. Monsters respawn, ammo is scarce, and players are often under-equipped. Movement speed is similar to monsters, making evasion difficult. Health can be regained by resting (which speeds up time) or rare blue potions, which also cure poison. Initial weapons include a handgun and survival knife.
• Items: Items are found throughout the pyramid and can be categorized into Weapons, Crystals, Potions, Miscellaneous Items, and Treasure. Picking up items grants points, with every two points increasing health by one.
• Weapons: Used for combat, some use multiple ammo types (HE, Sabot).
• Crystals: Each has a unique power that takes time to charge and depletes with use, eventually shattering. The yellow crystal for talking to the dead is an exception, with unlimited uses.

• Miscellaneous Items: Used for puzzle-solving (e.g., red cloak), game features (e.g., map), carrying other items (e.g., canvas bag), or unique roles (e.g., tinderbox).
