The Cave Systems in Pathways into Darkness involve navigating twenty-five levels of an otherworldly pyramid. Players must battle monsters, solve puzzles, and ultimately confront the dreaming alien god at the bottom.

Gameplay: The game blends first-person shooter and RPG elements with survival horror conventions. Combat is a significant part, but puzzle-solving and conversations with the dead are also crucial.

Conversations: Players interact with dead individuals by typing keywords into a dialogue box to gain puzzle hints, story information, and monster strategies. The yellow crystal allows unlimited conversations.

Combat: Players cannot simply 'run and gun.' Monsters respawn, ammo is scarce, and players are often under-equipped. Health is regained by resting (which speeds up time and leaves the player vulnerable) or by using rare blue potions. The player starts with a handgun and a survival knife.
