After character customization, you spawn in front of the bus station.

Open your phone ('Tab' key) and read the message from "Unknown" to receive the "Getting Started" quest.

Go to the payphone and talk to "U.N.", who reveals himself as Uncle Nelson.

Uncle Nelson instructs you to find his stash near the skatepark. It's on a ledge by the road leading to the motel.

Retrieve the $375 from the stash.

Speak to the motel manager in the house next to the motel to get the "Rent a motel room" quest.

You can pickpocket the $75 needed to rent the room from the manager.

Go to room 1 and enter it to complete the quest step.

Return to the payphone to speak with Uncle Nelson again, initiating the "Gearing Up" questline.

Tips

You can change your appearance in the game files, and in future updates, at barbershops, clothing shops, and tattoo parlors.
Depositing cash at the ATM is safer as you won't lose it if caught by police or if you die.
When buying items at the hardware store, you can add up to 10 at a time to your cart. Items that don't fit in your inventory will be placed on pallets outside.
Optional: Buy a trash grabber to recycle trash for cash, and a trash bag to dispose of the trash can in your motel room.
