Navigate Diablo IV's Vessel of Hatred difficulty levels. Understand Normal, Hard, Expert, Penitent, and Torment I-IV effects on EXP, Gold, and gear.

Alright, let's talk about how the difficulty settings work in Diablo IV, especially with the new Vessel of Hatred expansion. Before, you'd pick between Adventurer (World Tier 1) or Veteran (World Tier 2) when you started, and then push through Capstone Dungeons to unlock Nightmare (World Tier 3) and Torment (World Tier 4) for endgame content. Those higher World Tiers meant better EXP, more gold, and crucial endgame activities like Nightmare Dungeons and Helltides, plus Sacred and Ancestral gear. Vessel of Hatred shakes things up a bit, making more activities accessible earlier, but the core idea of progression through difficulty remains.

The biggest change is that there are now eight difficulties, split into two main groups. The first four – Normal, Hard, Expert, and Penitent – are for characters who are still leveling up. The other four are the endgame Torment difficulties (Torment I through Torment IV). While you'll always get more EXP and gold as you crank up the difficulty, the Torment tiers are still locked behind specific challenges, just like the old World Tier 3 and 4. Once you can handle Torment, you'll start finding gear that really lets you customize your build and take on the toughest challenges Diablo IV has to offer.

Normal, Hard, Expert and Penitent Difficulty Levels

A cool change in Vessel of Hatred is that fewer activities are locked behind specific difficulties. After you finish the campaign once, you can jump into things like Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons pretty much whenever you want, even with a brand-new character. Now, taking a fresh character into a Nightmare Dungeon might not be the smartest move, but hey, it's your choice! Normal and Hard difficulties are available right from the start. You can pick Expert after finishing the Prologue, and Penitent becomes available once you've completed the campaign (or skipped it with a new character).

For these earlier difficulties, you'll see a bump in EXP and gold as you go up, but the enemies get tougher too. It's a good way to get a feel for harder content, but don't expect any special gear drops from them. Honestly, unless you're powering through a second character really fast, there's not much incentive to push yourself on these harder difficulties if it slows down your kill rate. Stick with whatever feels comfortable until you're ready to tackle Torment.
