The setting of Fallout is after World War III, a global conflict that devastated much of the planet. Nations are embroiled in deep conflict following nuclear war fought over territory and resources. China invades Alaska, the United States conquers Canada, and the European Commonwealth devolves into a lawless community with warring nations vying for control of the western area. To safeguard its citizens, the United States constructed vaults, which are large, underground dwellings designed to protect inhabitants from radiation, chemical, and biological weapons.

Vaults are designed to house several hundred people. You originate from a vault known as Vault-13.

Your vault contains a water purification controller responsible for purifying all incoming water for consumption. Unfortunately, this controller chip has malfunctioned. Without a functioning chip, the vault's inhabitants will face a water shortage. You are selected to venture into the outside world to find a replacement chip before your vault's water supply is depleted.
