Install Fallout on Windows NT-based OS like XP and 2000. Requires 24-64MB RAM & specific service packs. Full config guide.
- Windows NT 4.0: 24MB RAM, Service Pack 3
- Windows 2000: 32MB RAM (update to latest service releases for maximum compatibility)
- Windows XP: 64MB RAM (ensure programs can run under 8-bit 640x480 display)
Walkthrough
- 1Copy the file D:\program\win\falloutw.___ to C:\fallout\falloutw.exe.
- 2Create a text file named fallout.cfg in the Fallout directory.
- 3Open fallout.cfg with Notepad (or a text editor) and insert the following lines:
[system]
Then, depending on your preference, add the following lines:
- To copy the Master Data File (master.dat, 318MB) to your hard disk, do not add any extra lines.
- If you do not want to copy master.dat, add:
master_dat=d:\master.dat - To copy the Critter Animations (critter.dat, 150MB), do not add any extra lines.
- If you do not want to copy critter.dat, add:
critter_dat=d:\critter.dat - For NT-specific issues, add:
freespace=0(zero) - Create a new block and add the following line:
[sound]
music_path2=d:\data\sound\music
A complete configuration file example (with all data on the CD) would look like this:
[system] master_dat=d:\master.dat critter_dat=d:\critter.dat freespace=0 [sound] music_path2=d:\data\sound\music
- Run Fallout. If it works, get the Windows 1.1 patch from Interplay (North American version only).
- If Fallout does not work, install the DOS version and play it on the DOS shell.
Tips
