How to Unlock Remodelling for Villagers

Learn how to remodel villager houses in Animal Crossing: New Horizons after completing the Happy Home Paradise DLC. Discover the process, costs, and limitations.

To remodel your villagers’ houses on your home island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you must first complete the Happy Home Paradise DLC story. This involves designing 30 Vacation Homes, creating various Facilities, and attending the Music Festival.

After the credits roll and you return to your home island, go to Resident Services. Tom Nook will inform you about inquiries for your remodelling services. Speak to Tom Nook at his desk and select the ‘Let’s talk homes’ option. You can then choose to remodel your villagers’ homes.

Select the villager whose house you wish to remodel. A pop-up will appear, and after paying a fee of 9,000 Bells and watching a short cutscene where Tom Nook confirms with the resident, you can begin the remodelling process.

Remodelling the Exterior

You can choose to remodel either the exterior or the interior of the house, or both in one session. For the exterior, you can select from four building shapes, various roofing and siding options, and different doors. You can also add a decorative wreath or sign to the door.

Remodelling the Interior

When remodelling the interior, you will be transported to a design space similar to Paradise Planning, but with Tom Nook present. Unlike vacation homes, you cannot increase the house size or add another floor; you must work with the standard dimensions. You will have access to all furniture from your Nook Shopping Catalogue, which includes items used in your vacation home designs. The more vacation homes you design, the more items you will have catalogued.

Villagers do not have any required items for their homes, giving you complete creative freedom. You can add partition walls, ceiling fixtures, adjust lighting brightness and color, and decorate however you see fit.

Once your design is complete, speak to Tom Nook to finalize it. The remodelled house will appear the next day. Additionally, Tom Nook will pay you 1,000 Nook Miles the following day as a thank you.
