Learn how to place and customize paths in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Discover creative ideas for flowerbeds, decking, borders, and elaborate park designs.
This page offers information on how to place paths as well as provide some ideas on how to use paths creatively to make unique parks and decorations.
How to place a path
To place the default dirt path, access the Island Designer app and select island construction. You will need to wear a construction hat while the app is active. Press the + button and select the dirt path design. Press A to place a path in front of your character. Pressing A on the end of a larger pathway will curve the edges. Pressing A on a curved path edge will delete it. If you press A on a path block in the middle of a path, it will delete that block.
For information on other Island Designer tools, refer to the Terraforming section for cliff-construction and waterscaping.
Custom Path Designs
You can purchase 8 different path types from the Nookstop, including one that allows custom designs. You can create your own path designs or upload and share them. Access the Custom Designs portal at the back of the Able Sisters’ Shop to download designs using character or design codes. Many popular designs are shared on social media and Animal Crossing forums.
Pathing Ideas
Pathing can be used for more than just connecting buildings. It can create decked areas, optical illusions, and fancy parks.
Flowerbeds
Place dirt paths beneath flower lines or flowerbeds to add depth and detail. You can plant flowers and trees on these paths. The dark dirt path, which costs 2,000 Nook Miles, can also be used.
Decking
Use the wood pathing from the Nookstop to create decked areas, suitable for beaches and outdoor cafes.
Path Borders
Custom designs can be placed on top of default path designs to create borders for paths and roads. Popular options include flower, brick, and natural borders, which create a more finished look but require significant time to place.
Elaborate Park Designs
Combine various custom and default designs to add complexity to parks. Stepping stones and dirt flower beds can enhance the feel of parks.
