Status Ailments:
- Stun: Unable to act. Fury drops to 0 but recovers at normal speed. Lasts 5 seconds. Removed if hit, and that hit will do double damage.
- Poison: Deals 4,166% (1/24) damage every 3 seconds in battle, and 0.5% on the field.
- Paralysis: Unable to act. Lasts 16 seconds (resets at the end of a battle or if killed).
- Freeze: Unable to act. Lasts 6 seconds. Most physical attacks cause Instant Death on a frozen subject. Enemies may be resistant to being shattered. An attack cannot shatter a subject if it's an attack that causes freezing.
- Petrification: Unable to act.
- Confusion: The subject moves randomly while losing HP and MP (1/45 mHP, 1/90 mMP, 5 times). Lasts 9 seconds. May disappear if the character is hit. If a character is confused mid-chain, they can still continue the chain.
- Silence: Unable to cast spells through the Symbology menu (can cast spells set as battle skills). Lasts 16 seconds.
- Instant Death: Instant HP death.
Ailment Details:
- Many enemies can inflict status ailments with specific attacks.
- An icon above a character's portrait indicates an ailment.
- Poison, Paralysis, and Petrification are not removed at the end of a battle; others are.
- Aside from Stun, ailments remain if a character is killed (Freeze may remain if killed by an un-shattering attack). You cannot heal the ailments of a dead character.
- Equipment can protect against Stun (from critical hits), Poison, Silence, Paralysis, Freeze, and Petrification.
- A Medicine Bottle protects against up to five status ailments, starting with Poison, until the end of battle.
- Petrification is less of a concern than in previous installments.
- A physical attack that deals no damage will not cause a status ailment.
- Water-elemental spells can freeze a subject even if damage is nullified or absorbed.
- Most enemies can be frozen and easily killed.
- The only way to petrify an enemy is by using an item.
Characters:
- There are 6 mandatory characters: Fayt, Cliff, Maria, Sophia, Mirage, Adray.
- There are 4 optional characters: Nel, Albel, Roger, Peppita.
- You can recruit a maximum of two optional characters.
- At least one of Nel, Albel, or Roger will join permanently at the beginning of Disc 2. By default, this is Nel, but Albel or Roger can join if you trigger an optional event at the end of Disc 1.
- Early in Disc 2, you have one opportunity to add Peppita. If you decline, you can recruit one of the other optional characters instead.
- Your active party consists of at most three characters. With 10 characters, there are 120 possible party combinations.
- Experiment with all characters to find your preferred team. Don't fixate on Fayt as the only controllable character.
- The author personally avoids keeping Cliff, Adray, and Maria in their active party for an entire playthrough due to better alternatives (Cliff/Adray) or slow speed and preference against ranged attacks (Maria).
