Learn how to create and refine items in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, including cost formulas and success rate calculations.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
To attempt item creation, select a character. You will only see the item's cost. Use the IC list to deduce the item's identity based on its cost.
  2. 2
To re-roll an item's cost, press Confirm twice while the cursor is on one of your characters. The cost is calculated using the formula: (1+a+b)x, where 'x' is the base cost (10% of total item value), 'a' is the combined cost modifiers, and 'b' is a random variable ranging from -0.05 to 0.05. Non-integers are rounded properly (e.g., 10.4 becomes 10, 10.5 becomes 11).
  3. 3
Your initial chance of success is determined by the formula: c+d-e, where 'c' is the combined Skill levels, 'd' is the IC item bonus (e.g., Multi-Flask grants 20), and 'e' is the Item rating.
  4. 4
Once the creation process begins, a time bar will gradually fill. If it fills completely (taking 7.2 seconds by default), you lose the Fol. Character icons will change to happy faces for success or sad faces for failure.
  5. 5
The time bar resets and begins filling again, while the quality bar decreases. You can continue trying to create the item or make multiple copies, but as the quality bar decreases, so do your chances of success.
  6. 6
If you are low on Fol, it is advisable to quit after a few attempts if you are failing, and then load your game.
  7. 7
Occasionally, a character's icon may change as soon as you start the creation process, indicating they are excluded. You should quit immediately unless the character has an abysmal skill level.
  8. 8
Specify Plan is used to modify item factors (refining). This process uses materials and Fol. The initial success rate is not affected by skill level, but skill level does affect the rate at which the quality bar drops, which negatively impacts success rate. For many factors, the initial success rate is between 10-20%.
  9. 9
The number in brackets at the end of a factor indicates the number of possible results when modifying. Each factor can be modified once per session. Only factors present at the start of the session can be modified. Modifying a factor successfully may end the session, and the session ends if each factor has been modified. The session can continue even if all 8 slots are filled.
  10. 10
The cost of refining is determined by the formula: (1+a+b)y/n, where 'y' is the total value of all factors combined, 'n' is the number of factors, and 'a' is the cost modifiers.
Tips
  • Learn to re-roll items quickly to find the desired cost figures. Focusing on one item at a time can be easier than trying to catch multiple figures.
  • The Gatling Gauntlets can appear with costs ranging from 3990 to 4410 with a neutral cost modifier. The Radiant Sword can appear from 2470 to 2730. Both have a rating of 70. With Fayt, Cliff, and Nel, a total Smithing skill level of 85 gives an initial success rate of 15%.
  • Easier alternatives like the Mythril Plate (55+5 DFP, 140 F), [Searing Sword] (150 ATP, 4000 F), [Damask Gauntlets] (190 ATP, 1450 F) are available if you struggle with the Radiant Sword and Gatling Gauntlets.
  • Items like the Rune Blade (5250 F) can be created and sold for a profit of 5000 Fol each if you need money.
  • Use Compounding to create items such as Fruity Potion (13), Syrupy Potion (20), Berry Potion (21), Aqua Potion (22), Sweet Potion (40), Resurrection Elixir (140), Resurrection Mist (210), and Might Tablets (90). Some are cheap to refine.
  • For cooking, consider Tuna Salad (15), Gratin (50), BBQ Pork Ramen (102), Natto, Cold Soba, and Fresh Spring Rolls (all 40). These can help conserve combat items.
  • Keep Spicy Cakes (86) or Discordant Desserts (6) handy. They allow you to MP kill a character outside of battle, which can be useful for certain Battle Trophies.
  • The healing effects of food do not refine the same way as battle items and have different costs. For example, Revive at 30% refines to 60% and costs 400 Fol.
  • If refining is very costly and you have limited funds, load your game upon failure. You cannot easily obtain more materials until the end of Disc 1, except for Compounding Elixirs and Cooking Ingredients.
