Master the Wild Area in Pokemon Sword and Shield! Learn camera controls, zone structures, activities like Watt Traders and Max Raid Battles, and dynamic weather effects.
The Wild Area in Pokémon Sword and Shield is a vast open zone with free camera movement, divided into numerous smaller zones that transition seamlessly. Each zone features unique wild Pokémon, with higher-level encounters generally found in zones further from the starting area. While most zones are accessible from the beginning, one requires the Rotom Bike upgrade. Your ability to catch Pokémon is limited by your Gym badges; you can only catch Pokémon below a certain Level indicated on your League Card.
Camera Controls:
- Move the right analogue stick to pan the camera 360 degrees left/right and slightly up/down.
- Click the right analogue stick inwards to zoom the camera in or out.
- Press the L Button to focus the camera behind you.
Activities in the Wild Area:
- Watt Traders: NPCs found near entrances/exits and other locations. They sell Watts for Rotom Bike upgrades, Poké Balls, and Technical Records (TRs). Their TR selection changes daily.
- Pokémon Dens: Hexagonal rock structures. Inspecting a glowing den yields Watts. Dens with a light beam allow for Max Raid Battles and provide more Watts.
- Ingredient Sellers: Green NPCs found in Rolling Field and Hammerlocke entrance. They sell ingredients for cooking curries, with wares changing daily.
- Camping King: A yellow NPC outside Motostoke entrance. Offers services like changing tent color and evaluating your Curry Dex for rewards.
- Digging Duo: NPCs in Bridge Field who dig for items in exchange for Watts. Items are random and can include fossils and Bottle Caps. Save your game before they dig, as you cannot retry.
Weather:
Weather in the Wild Area changes daily and varies by zone. It affects battle conditions and the types of wild Pokémon (including Strong Pokémon) that appear. You can check the current weather on the Town Map by pressing the + or - Button.
