You begin Sonic & Knuckles with 3 lives. Losing a life means you must restart the current Act from the last Starpost you activated. If you have no Rings, touching an enemy will cause you to lose a life. You will also lose a life if you crush yourself, drown, fall into bottomless pits, or if the timer runs out (Time Over). If you deplete all your lives, the game concludes, unless you have accumulated Continues.
