Learn how to prepare for the Elite Four in Pokémon Platinum. Discover strategies for capturing legendary Pokémon, including using the Master Ball or a careful approach with specific items and Pokémon.

Before challenging the Elite Four in Pokémon Platinum, you have two main approaches to capturing legendary Pokémon like Mesprit and Cresselia: using the Master Ball or relying on luck and preparation.

If you have the Master Ball: This is the easiest method. Use the Master Ball to capture the Pokémon instantly without further complications.

If you do not have the Master Ball: This method requires more effort and specific items:

• Quick Balls: Have approximately 50 Quick Balls ready.
• Dark-type Pokémon: Bring a Dark-type Pokémon around level 45-50. Sneasel is recommended.
• False Swipe: Have a Pokémon that knows the move False Swipe. Sneasel and Scyther can learn it by leveling up, or you can teach it using a TM purchased at the Veilstone Department Store.
• Max Repel: This item prevents lower-level wild Pokémon from appearing.

The Strategy:

1. The legendary Pokémon teleports to random routes around Sinnoh. Your goal is to encounter it.
2. Once you believe it's nearby, use a Max Repel. Ensure your high-level Dark-type Pokémon is the leader of your party to increase the encounter rate for the legendary.
3. Enter the grass and hope for an encounter before the Pokémon teleports again. Some players have reported finding Mesprit and Cresselia west of Hearthome City, which might be a good area to search.
4. When you encounter the Pokémon:
   • You can immediately throw a Quick Ball, though success is unlikely.
   • Alternatively, damage the Pokémon to make it easier to catch in subsequent encounters.
5. Recommended Catching Method: Start with a powerful attack, then switch to False Swipe as its HP gets lower.
6. Status Effects: Use Freeze and Paralyze to aid in capture.
7. AVOID POISON: Do not poison the Pokémon, as it can significantly hinder your efforts.
8. Save Frequently: Save your game before each encounter and reset if anything goes wrong.

This preparation is for players who have not yet defeated the Elite Four. If you have already beaten them and obtained the National Pokédex, a different approach may be necessary.
