Navigate Mae'Var's Guildhall in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, from stealing from Gorch to assassinating Rayic Gethras and recruiting Edwin.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Make your way to the Docks District and enter Mae'Var's Guildhall. Speak to Gorch at the desk.
  2. 2
Gorch has a Rogue Stone for sale, which is needed for a mysterious doorway in the Bridge District. You can use Potions of Master Thievery to steal from him and sell items back to him.
  3. 3
After finishing with Gorch, tell him you are there to see Mae'Var and present the Letter of Transfer.
  4. 4
Go to the back of the guildhall and ask the named thieves for directions to Mae'Var, who is in the basement.
  5. 5
Before heading to the basement, explore the second floor. In the first room, you can find minor loot.
  6. 6
In the room with practice doors on the second floor, remove traps from the five practice doors and pick all fifteen locks for experience (XP) and loot, including gold, gems, a Rogue Stone, a Short Sword +2, a Buckler +1, and Studded Leather Armor +1.
  7. 7
Ignore the other room on the second floor for now and proceed to the third floor.
  8. 8
On the third floor, find minor loot in the dormitory and a Bastard Sword +1 in another room's cupboard. A Spear +1 is also in a cupboard.
  9. 9
Head back downstairs to the basement and go through the concealed door to find Mae'Var.
  10. 10
Mae'Var will set you a test: steal an item from either the Temple of Lathander or the Temple of Talos, waiting until nightfall.
  11. 11
To steal the Statuette of Lathander, locate it in a safe within the Temple of Lathander. Be aware that Dawnmaster Kreel does not sleep and may become hostile.
  12. 12
To steal the Necklace of Talos, find it in a chest beside Mistress Ada's bed in the Temple of Talos. This earns 20000 XP.
  13. 13
Return to Mae'Var with the stolen item for 29500 XP.
  14. 14
Mae'Var will send you to speak with Edwin on the third floor for your next assignment.
  15. 15
Speak to Edwin, who will task you with assassinating a Cowled Wizard named Rayic Gethras. Refusing this task will fail the quest and prevent you from recruiting Edwin.
  16. 16
Go to Rayic Gethras's home, next door to the Galvarey Estate. Prepare with elemental resistances.
  17. 17
On the ground floor, deal with six Mephits (Fire, Ice, and Magma). A trapped and locked cabinet contains scrolls, one of which is cursed. Another scroll is on a table.
  18. 18
Head upstairs to face two Stone Golems. You can find gold in a pillow.
  19. 19
Proceed to the top floor to confront Rayic Gethras. Use Breach to make him vulnerable.
  20. 20
Loot a Quarterstaff +2 and Bracers of Defense AC 7 from his remains. Remove the trap from the table and search it for a scroll. Another trapped container holds a Wand of Fire.
  21. 21
Return to Edwin for 20000 XP.
  22. 22
Edwin's next assignment is to obtain documents from a merchant named Marcus in the Sea's Bounty.
  23. 23
Go to the Sea's Bounty and speak to Marcus by the bar. You can threaten or cajole him (requires Strength and/or Charisma), buy the documents, or kill him.
  24. 24
Return to Edwin with the documents. You will earn 10000 XP.
  25. 25
Edwin will then send you back to Mae'Var for a final test of loyalty.
  26. 26
Go to the basement and Mae'Var will send you to the Sea's Bounty to kill a traitor named Embarl.
  27. 27
Warning: Refusing this task or demanding a greater reward will make Mae'Var hostile and attract Arkanis Gath, who can kill you in a single hit with a weapon that always hits.
  28. 28
Return to the Sea's Bounty and go upstairs to find Embarl. He will explain that Mae'Var is plotting against Renal Bloodscalp.
  29. 29
Instead of killing Embarl, ask for his dagger.
  30. 30
Return to Mae'Var with proof-of-death (Embarl's dagger) for 18750 XP. He will dismiss you and send you to Edwin.
  31. 31
Warning: If you wish to obtain Gorch's Cloak of the Nymph or his Potions of Master Thievery, do so now, as events will change shortly. Clear a party slot for Edwin if pursuing trophies.
  32. 32
Back upstairs, speak to Edwin. Tell him you are there to spy on Mae'Var.
  33. 33
Edwin will reveal Mae'Var's plans, give you the key to his strongbox, and offer to join your party. Accept his offer to recruit him.
  34. 34
Head down to the second floor and retrieve Mae'Var's letter.

  • To obtain Marcus's documents, you can use Strength and/or Charisma to threaten or cajole him, buy them, or kill him.

  • XP from Gorch's practice doors (gold, gems, Rogue Stone, Short Sword +2, Buckler +1, Studded Leather Armor +1).
  • 20000 XP for stealing the Necklace of Talos.
  • 29500 XP from Mae'Var for the first quest.
