Navigate Spellhold Dungeon Level 1 in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, solve riddles, and find key items like the Bag of Holding.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
After a cutscene (a non-interactive cinematic the game plays automatically) (a non-interactive sequence showing events), Bodhi will leave you to face a gauntlet. Imoen will appear and offer to join your party. You can recruit her or have her leave; if she leaves, she will eventually appear at the Copper Coronet. If you dismiss another party member (an NPC (non-player character — anyone the game controls, not you) - non-player character) to make room for Imoen, they are gone permanently. Imoen joins with the maximum 1.25 million XP.
  2. 2
Head west up the stairs and through the door. Destroy the Clay Golem and disarm the trap on a container to find a Bag of Holding.
  3. 3
Another container holds gems, magical ammunition, and a Scroll of Prismatic Spray. The "Opal Stone" gem is a quest item.
  4. 4
To the south is an exit to Level 2, which can be ignored for now. To the north is an unremovable floor trap that will kill anyone attempting to disarm it.
  5. 5
Backtrack to the central area and go up the northern staircase. Take the Star Sapphire from a container at the top and go through the door to your right.
  6. 6
Defeat the Gibberlings and Mutated Gibberlings. Loot a Spear +3, magical bullets, and the "Ruby Stone" gem from a container. A barrel contains minor loot.
  7. 7
Return to the corridor and go through the door to the west to enter a puzzle room with eleven statues and a central chest.
  8. 8
Solve the statue riddles by pairing them with the correct items found in the chest:
    • "Try to defeat me, but try in vain. When I win, I end your pain" - Grinning Skull (Death)
  9. 9
"I have two heads but one body. The more I stand still, the faster I run" - Hourglass
  10. 10
"Always do I tell the truth, yet cannot speak. Look at me and see what really is" - Mirror
  11. 11
"Name me and so you shall break me" - The Gagged Man (Silence)
  12. 12
"I will save your life, but yet you can die by me. I will settle disputes, yet not with words" - Sword Medallion
  13. 13
"To those within the dungeon, I am joy. To those fully beneath my gaze, I can be Hell." - Sun Medallion
  14. 14
"I have seen the mountains rise. I have seen the fall of Netheril. You shall die, but still shall I march on" - Sundial (Time)
  15. 15
"Here, in this place, you swallow me. Yet, were I more, I could swallow you" - Jar of Water
  16. 16
"Two brothers we are; great burdens we bear; all day we are pressed..." - Worn-out Boots
  17. 17
"No beginning. No end. I am a symbol of the world's cycles." - Golden Circlet
  18. 18
"At night, I come without being fetched; at day, I am gone without being stolen." - Star Medallion
  19. 19
Completing the puzzle earns 20000 XP and yields a Dusty Rose Ioun Stone and a Sapphire Stone from the chest.
  20. 20
Exit the puzzle room and proceed north into a corridor with two doors. Enter the northern door to find a room with six mephits and a Ruhk (a Rakshasa spellcaster). Defeat the mephits with an area-of-effect (AoE) attack before engaging the Ruhk.
  21. 21
A shimmering portal is at the back of the room. To avoid combat, drop the Opal and Ruby Stones. If you choose to fight, cast Protection From Evil, Remove Fear, and fire protection spells, and ensure all party members have a +3 weapon equipped. Interacting with the portal summons creatures based on the stones you possess:
    • Opal Stone - Greater Wolfwere (15000 XP)
  22. 22
Ruby Stone - Pit Fiend (9000 XP)
  23. 23
Sapphire Stone - A Genie who congratulates you and rewards you with a suit of Doomplate +3. (Note: The Doomplate +3 is not superior to Full Plate +1).
  24. 24
Return to the corridor and go through the door to the east to find another puzzle room with six faces on a central enclosure and six on the wall. Interacting with them teleports you to the Statue of Riddles where you must answer riddles.
  25. 25
Solve the wall and central enclosure riddles:
    • Central Enclosure (starting with the face nearest the door, moving right):
      • "They follow and lead..." - Shadows
  26. 26
    "I have holes throughout..." - A sponge
  27. 27
" I am free for the taking..." - Breath
  28. 28
"Alive as you but without breath..." - Fish
  29. 29
"Of all your possessions..." - A secret
  30. 30
"I can have no color..." - A hole.
  31. 31
    Wall (working clockwise):
    • "Lighter than what I am made of..." - Ice
  32. 32
"A spirited jig it dances bright..." - Fire
  33. 33
"The man who invented it..." - A coffin
  34. 34
"The life I lead is mere hours or less..." - A candle
  35. 35
"The more that there is, the less that you see..." - Darkness
  36. 36
"They come to witness the night..." - Stars.
  37. 37
Answering all twelve riddles earns a Ring of Regeneration and 5000 XP per party member.
  38. 38
Continue northeast around the corridor to encounter Yuan-ti, including a Mage. Further on, you will reach an impassable trap corridor.
  39. 39
Return to the starting room. The western passageway is blocked. Cast Chaotic Commands on your frontline fighters, go up the stairs to the south, and proceed through the exit to Level 2.

Spellhold Dungeon - Level 2

The first room on Level 2 is divided into two halves. Crossing into the lower half triggers a gate.

Tips
  • The Bag of Holding is crucial for managing inventory space.
  • The Opal Stone and Ruby Stone can be used to bypass combat encounters if dropped before interacting with the portal.
  • The Doomplate +3 is a powerful armor but not as good as Full Plate +1.
  • Ensure your party is prepared for combat before interacting with the portal if you choose to fight the summoned creatures.
