Warriors in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn are defined by their combat prowess, focusing on defeating enemies through direct confrontation. They begin with four weapon proficiency points and gain an additional point at levels 3, 6, 9, and so on, accumulating up to 19 proficiency points by level 39.

Fighters, Barbarians, Rangers, and Paladins receive an increased attack rate at levels 7 and 13.

High Level Abilities (HLAs)

Monks also utilize these HLAs. Note that "attacks" refers to both melee and ranged attacks. If a ranged attack has an Area of Effect (AoE) like the Fighter/Druid's Fire Seeds, abilities like Smite or Deathblow can affect multiple targets simultaneously.

Most abilities can be selected multiple times. However, Deathblow and Whirlwind Attack should only be selected once, as their unlocked abilities are superior versions of the precursor.

  • Power Attack: For two rounds, all attacks stun targets for 4 rounds if they fail a saving throw vs. Death (with a -4 penalty).
  • Critical Strike: All attacks in the next round are critical hits. Even targets immune to critical hits will be affected. Requires Power Attack.
  • Smite: For two rounds, all attacks knock back targets and stun them for 1 round. Additionally, all attacks in the next round are critical hits. Very large creatures are immune to the knockback. Requires Critical Strike and can only be selected once.
  • Deathblow: For two rounds, all attacks against creatures of 10th level or lower are killing blows.
  • Greater Deathblow: For two rounds, all attacks against creatures of 12th level or lower are killing blows. Requires Deathblow. (Note: On Legacy of Bhaal difficulty, all enemies are above 12th level, rendering this line useless.)
  • Whirlwind Attack: Sets Attacks Per Round (APR) to 10 for one round, with a -4 penalty to THAC0 and damage. If dual-wielding, two attacks use the offhand weapon. Effects from items granting extra attacks (e.g., Belm) are ignored.
  • Greater Whirlwind Attack: Sets APR to 10 for one round with no penalties. Otherwise identical to Whirlwind Attack.
  • War Cry: Causes fear in opponents within 30' who fail a saving throw vs. Spell, similar to the Mage spell Horror. Generally considered a low-priority ability.
  • Hardiness: Grants 40% physical damage resistance for 1 round per 2 levels. Stacks with Armor of Faith but not with the Dwarven Defender's Defensive Stance.
  • Resist Magic: Sets Magic Resistance to 50% for 4 rounds. Monks cannot select this as they gain Magic Resistance inherently.
  • Tracking (Ranger): Provides a general indication of nearby creatures and their direction. Useful in specific contexts but often considered a waste of an HLA slot otherwise.
  • Summon Deva (Paladin) / Summon Fallen Deva (Blackguard): Functions identically to the Cleric's Summon Deva/Fallen Deva spell but is cast as an ability. Can only be selected once.
