Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, presided over four decades of peace and prosperity in Rome, finding it a city of brick and leaving it marble. His reign saw significant military successes, extending Rome's borders and pacifying regions. However, he also suffered two notable military defeats: one in Gaul in 15 BC against an alliance of the Sicambri, Tencteri, and Usipetes tribes, and a more devastating loss in 9 AD in Germania, where three legions led by Publius Quintilius Varus were annihilated by German Cherusci tribesmen. This latter defeat deeply shook Augustus, leading him to take measures to secure the Empire and express profound distress over the loss of his legions.
