History

Russia is described as a vast, resource-rich country with a complex history, having been a superpower and a failed state, a monarchy, communist dictatorship, and democracy. Its geography ranges from hot summers to famously brutal winters. Archaeological evidence points to occupation for four thousand years, with early settlers including Greeks and Persians, followed by various nomadic tribes and the East Slavs. Scandinavian Vikings, known as the Rus, are believed to have founded Kievan Rus in the 8th century, establishing a trade route from the Baltic to the Black Sea. By the 12th century, the Kiev Empire was vast but began to fragment economically and politically, eventually dissolving by the close of the 12th century.
