Follow this Fallout 3 guide to navigate Fairfax Ruins, discover the Fairfax Metro, gain the trust of the Brotherhood Outcasts at Fort Independence, and find the unique Miss Launcher.
Walkthrough
- 1Leave Megaton and head west towards an elevated highway. Follow the highway south until you reach the Fairfax Ruins.
- 2Explore Fairfax Ruins, being mindful of Raiders, landmines, and tripwires. Investigate the house on the north side for a Raider with a Missile Launcher and a turret.
- 3Enter the Fairfax Metro, disarm the rigged shotgun in the ticket booth, and loot ammo and first aid boxes. Search the rubble in the southeast for the Chinese Army: Spec. Ops. Training Manual.
- 4Exit the Metro and head west to Fort Independence.
- 5Approach Fort Independence and speak with Defender Morgan. Ask how to sign up to meet Protector Casdin.
- 6Protector Casdin will offer to trade for .556 ammo, Grenades, Stimpaks, or Rad-Away. Do not break into Fort Independence yet, as it will turn the Outcasts hostile.
- 7To gain admittance, gather enough junk. Avoid trading Energy Weapons and Power Armor, as they are more valuable for personal use or repair. Sensor Modules offer the best trade-in value.
- 8After gaining the Outcasts' trust, you can steal the “Fort Independence Access” key from Casdin or pick the locked door [Hard].
- 9Explore Fort Independence. In the eastern room, find two locked safes [Easy] and download “Fort Independence Field Report 1” and “Fort Independence Field Report 2” from a terminal.
- 10In the central room, find a Nuka-Cola Quantum. In the western room, find a first aid box.
- 11Descend to the Fort Independence Lower Level. Hack the “Door Terminal” [Hard] or find the “Fort Ind. Terminal Access Password” on a nearby desk.
- 12Continue downstairs. Go through a door to the south. At a path split, take the stairs up to find the “Turret Control System” terminal [Average].
- 13Go back down and enter the room to the west. Break into a locked footlocker [Easy] to obtain the “Fort Ind. Storage Key”.
- 14The room to the east is an infirmary with medical components and drugs.
- 15In the second room to the west, access “Research Terminals” for notes on specific weapons.
- 16Go through the locked door [Hard] to the south, or use the “Fort Ind. Storage Key”. Inside, find a Minigun, six ammo boxes (two with Alien Power Cells), three first aid boxes, a Plasma Rifle, a Laser Rifle, two Mini Nukes, and the unique **Miss Launcher**.
- 17Head south from Fort Independence/Fairfax Ruins until you find Andale.
- 18Enter the Smith’s House and steal the Andale Basement Key from the bedside table.
- 19Explore the Wilson’s House.
- 20Take the Andale Shed Key from the bedside table in Old Man Harris’ House.
- 21Explore the Garden Shed and find skeletons, fridges with Strange Meat, and Combat Knives.
- 22If you succeed at a Speech check when confronted by the adults of Andale, they will let you go. Otherwise, you will have to fight them.
- 23Report to Old Man Harris.
- 24Explore the basement of the Smith’s house to find a scene similar to the Wilson’s shed. Grab the Rippers and a copy of Grognak the Barbarian.
- 25Head south from Andale along its road until it bisects an east-west road. Follow this road uphill to the west to reach The Overlook Drive-In.
- 26Shoot parked cars to cause explosions and kill Raiders.
- 27Head north-west to find a Raider Outpost. Pick the lock to a gate [Hard] or find the unlocked door to the Cliffside Caverns to the west.
- 28Proceed west in the Raider Outpost cavern, avoiding landmines. Go over a wooden bridge to a platform with a generator. Circle behind the generator to find a copy of Grognak the Barbarian.
- 29Head north from the path split to find a Yao Guai, and later, an entrance into the Yao Guai Cave.
- 30In the Yao Guai Caves, sneak around and defeat the Yao Guai.
- 31On the ground level, in the north-western corner of the large central chamber, find the Schematic - Nuka-Grenade.
- 32Return to the Raider Outpost and continue on the western path.
