Tekken Tag Tournament 2 features a unique tag team system where players select two fighters. You can switch between your active and inactive character at any time. The inactive character can gradually recover lost health. A round is lost if either of your fighters' life bars are depleted, or if time runs out and you have less cumulative life remaining.

Certain character pairings have special interactions, including unique intros, win poses, lose poses, and powerful Tag Throws. The game also includes a 'Netsu' system, which affects gameplay. A character's 'liking' or 'disliking' of their partner influences how quickly they can gain a damage boost when their partner is hit.
