Learn about the Library in Dungeon Keeper: cost, research value, attracted creatures, and how research works for spells and rooms.

Cost per tile: 200 gold

Research value: 1000 (researching the Library itself is rarely done)

Shortcut key: L

Creatures attracted: Warlock

The Library is a room where creatures can be assigned to research new spells and more advanced rooms. Warlocks are automatically drawn to this task. If you have Warlocks with a level greater than 1, they will attack any creature that is not a Wizard or Warlock trespassing in the Library. To avoid this, either avoid training your Warlocks too early or build the Library in an isolated area away from your other creatures.

Each room or spell has a specific Research value. Once this value is reached, the spell or room becomes available. More complex items require more research points. The "Destroy Walls" spell, for example, requires a massive 750,000 research points, making its research very time-consuming.

The order in which spells and rooms are researched is fixed. Even though some spells take longer to research than others, they unlock in a predefined sequence:

  1. Create Imp (usually available)
  2. Treasure Room (usually available)
  3. Lair (usually available)
  4. Hatchery (usually available)
  5. Training Room (usually available)
  6. Library (usually available)
  7. Sight of Evil
  8. Bridge
  9. Speed
  10. Must Obey
  11. Guard Post
  12. Call-to-Arms
  13. Workshop
  14. Conceal Monster
  15. Barracks
  16. Hold Audience
  17. Prison
  18. Cave In
  19. Torture Chamber
  20. Heal
  21. Temple
  22. Lightning
  23. Graveyard
  24. Protect
  25. Scavenger Room
  26. Chicken
  27. Disease
  28. Armageddon
  29. Destroy Walls

To accelerate research, assign your highest-leveled creatures to the task, or utilize Dragons, Wizards, Warlocks, or Fairies, as they are the most capable creatures for research, especially the hero Wizard.

Tips
  • Consider the placement of your Library to prevent Warlocks from attacking your other creatures.
  • High-level creatures and specific powerful creature types (Dragons, Wizards, Warlocks, Fairies) significantly speed up research.
  • Be aware that researching advanced spells like "Destroy Walls" can take a very long time due to their high research point requirements.
