Walkthrough
  1. 1
Leveling Up: Pokemon will attempt to evolve when they reach a certain level. For example, Treecko evolves into Grovyle at level 16, and then into Sceptile at level 36.
  2. 2
Elemental Stones: Use a Thunderstone, Fire Stone, Water Stone, Leaf Stone, Sun Stone, or Moon Stone on a Pokemon at any level to evolve it. It's recommended to wait until the Pokemon has learned all desired moves by leveling up, as evolution may prevent further move learning through leveling.
  3. 3
Trading: Graveler, Machoke, Kadabra, and Haunter evolve when traded at any level. Traded Pokemon retain their move-learning capabilities.
  4. 4
Trading with Items: Some Pokemon evolve when traded while holding a specific item. For instance, Seadra holding a Dragon Scale evolves into Kingdra.
  5. 5
High Happiness: Pokemon can evolve when their happiness is very high and they level up. Happiness increases through battling, keeping the Pokemon in your party, preventing faints, leveling up, using beneficial items like Protein and Iron, and walking around. A Pokemon with the highest happiness level will say "It adores you. It can't possibly love you any more. I even feel happy seeing it" to the lady south of the battle tent in Verdanturf Town. Golbat evolves into Crobat this way.
Tips
  • Stopping evolution by pressing the B button allows you to teach specific moves that the evolved form might not learn by leveling up. For example, stopping Torchic's evolution at level 16 allows it to learn Fire Spin at level 25, which Combusken cannot learn by leveling up. Torchic can also learn Flamethrower at level 43, while Combusken/Blaziken require a TM.
  • Treecko can learn Mega Drain at level 26, a move its evolved form Grovyle cannot learn. If you raise Treecko past level 29, Grovyle cannot learn Leaf Blade, which is the best move for Treecko/Grovyle/Sceptile.
  • When evolving with a stone, wait until your Pokemon has learned all desired moves by leveling up, as it may not learn any more moves by leveling after evolution.
  • Pokemon that evolve by trading will still learn the same moves at the same levels as their pre-evolved forms.
  • Seadra holding a Dragon Scale evolves into Kingdra, a Water/Dragon-type with balanced stats.
  • To check happiness, visit the lady in the house south of the battle tent in Verdanturf Town. If she says "It adores you. It can't possibly love you any more. I even feel happy seeing it," the Pokemon is at maximum happiness and will evolve at the next level if it evolves via happiness.
