The rest of Route 119

Defeat your rival on Route 119 in Pokemon Emerald, learn their team's weaknesses, and claim the valuable Fly HM and other items.

After dealing with the Team Aqua members blocking the bridge near the Weather Institute, cross it to find your rival waiting. Prepare for a challenging battle!

BATTLE: RIVAL (BRENDAN/MAY)

The rival's team depends on your starter Pokemon:

• If you chose Treecko: Pelipper (Lv. 29), Lombre (Lv. 29), Combusken (Lv. 31)
• If you chose Torchic: Lombre (Lv. 29), Slugma (Lv. 29), Marshtomp (Lv. 31)
• If you chose Mudkip: Slugma (Lv. 29), Lombre (Lv. 29), Pelipper (Lv. 29), Grovyle (Lv. 31)

Rival's Pokemon Weaknesses:

• Pelipper (Water/Flying): Electric (4x), Rock
• Lombre (Water/Grass): Poison, Flying
• Combusken (Fire/Fighting): Water, Flying, Psychic, Ground
• Slugma (Fire): Water, Rock, Ground (slow speed)
• Marshtomp (Water/Ground): Grass (4x)
• Grovyle (Grass): Poison, Flying (low defense, high speed)

After the battle, your rival will reward you with HM02: Fly. This HM allows you to fly to any previously visited city. Note that it cannot be used outside of battle until you obtain the next gym badge. In battle, Fly is a two-turn attack where you are immune to most damage on the first turn.

After defeating your rival, pick up the Elixir located to the south. If you wish, you can Surf south in the water to find a Leaf Stone.

• Guitarist Fabian: Manectric (Lv. 26) - Reward: $832
• Ninja Boy Yasu: Ninjask (Lv. 26) - Reward: $312
• Ninja Boy Hideo: Koffing (Lv. 25), Koffing (Lv. 25) - Reward: $300

You can initiate a double battle with Guitarist Fabian and Ninja Boy Yasu by walking between them, yielding a combined reward of $1144.

Continue north from your rival's battle location. You'll encounter another Ninja Boy near a fake tree. Battle him, then proceed east into Fortree City.
