Walkthrough
- 1In Oldale Town, visit the Pokemon Center (southwest corner) to heal your Pokemon for free and use the PC to deposit or withdraw items and Pokemon.
- 2Visit the Pokemon Mart to purchase items. Currently available items and their prices are: Antidote ($100), Awakening ($250), Paralyze Heal ($200), Potion ($300). Poke Balls ($200) can only be purchased after obtaining the Pokedex from Professor Birch.
- 3Talk to the man next to the house in the southeast corner of Oldale Town to receive a free Potion.
- 4Head north from Oldale Town into Route 103.
- 5Continue north through the tall grass to find your rival. Engage in a battle with your rival, whose Level 5 Pokemon will be strong against your starter Pokemon.
- 6After defeating your rival, return to Littleroot Town.
- 7Enter Professor Birch's lab and speak with him. You and your rival will each receive a Pokedex. Your rival will also give you 5 Poke Balls.
- 8Return to Oldale Town. Heal your Pokemon if necessary.
- 9Head west from Oldale Town towards Route 102.
- 10Battle trainers on Route 102 for experience and money. The trainers are: Youngster Calvin (Poochyena, Level 5, $80), Bug Catcher Rick (Wurmple, Level 4; Wurmple, Level 4, $64), Youngster Allen (Zigzagoon, Level 5; Taillow, Level 3, $48), and Lass Tiana (Zigzagoon, Level 4; Shroomish, Level 4, $64).
- 11Encounter wild Pokemon in the tall grass on Route 102: Wurmple (Common), Zigzagoon (Uncommon), Poochyena (Uncommon), Lotad (Rare), Ralts (Rare), Seedot (Rare).
- 12Continue west along Route 102. Collect 2 Oran Berries and 2 Pecha Berries halfway along the route. Plant some berries to grow more.
- 13Near the end of Route 102, pick up a Potion located below a ledge.
- 14Continue west into Petalburg City.

- The Pokemon Mart sells useful items, with prices increasing and item rarity increasing in later parts of the game.
- Ralts is a highly recommended Pokemon to catch on Route 102 due to its strong Special Attack and Special Defense upon evolving into Gardevoir.
