Boss: Malacoda

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Weak Areas: Four Tentacles (two on each side). Shooting any part of the tentacles damages the boss. They can be destroyed.

Phases:

  1. Phase 1: Tentacle Attacks
    • Malacoda has two main attacks:
    • Spikes: The creature's tentacles hover and fire spikes at you. You can shoot these, but it's better to just dodge.
    • Tentacle Ram: The tentacle's pincers move, it aims at you, then dashes forward to ram you. You need to run to the side to avoid this.
  2. Phase 2: Destroying Tentacles
    • Focus your fire on the tentacles. They have low health, but can be tricky to hit as they move. Using a powerful weapon like a magnum, rifle, or machine gun can speed things up. Try to destroy one tentacle early on.
  3. Phase 3: Rocket Launcher Intervention
    • Eventually, Kirk will start dropping small crates from his helicopter. These contain rocket launchers.
    • When a crate is dropped, pick it up. Jill will automatically swap her current weapon for the rocket launcher. The dropped weapon will remain on the ground.
    • Equip the rocket launcher and wait for a tentacle to become still. They often pause right before a ram attack.
    • Wait for a tentacle to face you and start its ram animation (pincers moving). Aim and fire the rocket launcher. If your aim is good, you'll hit it.
    • Kirk will drop a total of four crates, each with a rocket launcher. He seems to time these drops based on when you fire the rockets.
    • Once all four tentacles are destroyed, Malacoda will stop attacking.

Strategy:

  • The boss's attacks are limited to its tentacles.
  • If Jill only has a shotgun, hitting the flailing tentacles at a distance can be tough. Aim high and shoot any part of the tentacle.
  • Destroying tentacles speeds up the fight.
  • Wait for the tentacle to pause and prepare for a ram before firing the rocket launcher for a guaranteed hit.
  • Don't spend too much time aiming; Kirk will keep dropping rockets.

  • Handprint (28/30): During this fight, look for a large pipe sticking out of the wreckage in the center of the platform you're on. The handprint is on this pipe, behind Jill and Chris. Scan it while fighting Malacoda.

Scans:

  • Green Herb - Scan the damaged piece of the metal platform on the left side.
  • Malacoda is defeated. Kirk will contact you before a cutscene.
Tips
  • Rocket Launcher Trick: If you save one of the rocket launchers from this fight in Jill's inventory, it can make a much later battle significantly easier. This is a useful, albeit cheap, trick!
  • This is especially useful if you didn't save the rocket launcher found earlier when Rachel and a Scagdead were chasing Jill.
