Sunstone Rock

Guide to tracking down three escaped prisoners in Horizon Zero Dawn. Learn how to find Ullia, Gavan, and Rasgrund, and complete the Sunstone Rock side quest.

Alright, so you've stumbled upon Sunstone Rock, a prison way out on the southwest edge of the map. When you get close, you'll see the guards are busy fighting off two Behemoths. Your best bet here is to freeze them with freeze arrows, then unload on their weak spots, usually their loaders near the head, for massive damage. Once those big guys are down, head into the prison and chat with Janeva. She'll tell you that three inmates bolted during the chaos. Don't worry, you can hunt them down in any order you like!

The first one, Ullia, is chilling at the Blackwing Snag bandit camp. If you haven't cleared it out yet, be prepared for a fight. She's usually up on a lookout tower. If the camp is already clear, just sneak up behind her and get a clean shot to her head. Once she's down, talk to her to tick that objective off your list.

Next up is Gavan, who's hiding out near Brightmarket, a village northwest of Meridian. Head into the village and talk to the Innkeeper – they're definitely being cagey. Leave the inn through the north exit and use your Focus to spot some manacles near some rocks. Follow the trail your Focus highlights southwest, which will lead you out of the village in the same direction. You'll find a building west of the village where Gavan is. He's being cornered by some bandits, so take them out and then speak with Gavan to mark him as found.

The last prisoner, Rasgrund, is a bit more of a trek. Fast travel to the campfire just southwest of Meridian Village and follow the road heading west/northwest. Keep going past a Corrupted Zone. When the road starts to curve southwest, veer straight south into the woods. You're looking for what looks like a cave. Be super careful here – Rasgrund has set up proximity traps all through the ravine, but your Focus will help you spot them. There are some handholds just inside the ravine that lead to a rope, then more handholds. Keep following this path south until you have to jump into the water below. Make sure to check the water for any traps before you jump in! Cross a log and look for more handholds; these will eventually lead you to the rock formation where Rasgrund is. He decides to go out with a bang rather than go back to prison. Once he's dealt with, head back to Janeva at Sunstone Rock to report in and wrap up the quest.
