Learn how to track and defeat the Great Jagras in Monster Hunter: World. This guide covers its weaknesses, attack patterns, and strategies for beginners.
Alright, so you've just finished up A Kestodon Kerfuffle, and guess what? We're diving right into the next hunt: The Great Jagras Hunt! Don't worry, even though it flows right after, you can totally tackle this one fresh if you want. Just head back to camp, and then pick up The Great Jagras Hunt from the quest board. This time, you can even bring friends along if you like!
Before we get going, make sure your weapon is sharp. The Field Team Leader will remind you, but it's easy to forget. Grab your Whetstone – it's on your Item Bar, just use the D-Pad to select it and press [Square]/[X]. It takes a little bit, so don't try to do it mid-fight! A dull weapon hits way weaker, and your weapon's sharpness is shown by that colored bar below your health. Red is the worst, yellow is the best. Keep an eye on that sword icon!
Feeling a bit nervous or just want some backup? No problem! You can use an SOS Flare. Just hit [Options]/[Menu], go to the 'Quest' tab, and select 'Fire SOS Flare'. Doing this for the first time even nets you a trophy!
Hunting the Great Jagras
Where you start looking for the Great Jagras depends on how you began this quest. If you're coming straight from the Kestodon fight, look for its signs north of the beach where you just were. If you went back to Astera, start from the Southwest Camp and head north. You'll find tracks along the western edge of the river-crossed lowlands.
When you find a track, check it out! You'll get Research Points and boost your Scoutfly Level. Keep investigating clues; as your Scoutfly Level goes up, they'll start showing you trails to follow. Eventually, you'll be able to see the Great Jagras's location on your map. This big guy likes to hang out in AREA 2, but it often moves counter-clockwise through AREA 1 and AREA 3.

Alright, it's time to face the music! The Great Jagras is basically your tutorial boss. It's the weakest large monster in the game, so you can probably just wail on it and win. But hey, building good habits now will save you later! Later monsters won't be so forgiving.
AREA 1 is a pretty good spot to fight it. It's open, you can grab Vitality plants for quick healing, and there aren't too many distractions. Honestly, though, the Great Jagras will probably run off to its lair in AREA 2 when it gets hurt anyway. Most monsters do this to heal or find a better spot to fight. If your Scoutfly Level isn't high enough yet, you might need to hunt for more tracks before you can properly track it. But if you've been boosting that level, you should be good to go. Use this time to heal up, sharpen your weapon, and maybe grab some nearby materials. Just don't take too long, or it might recover!
The Great Jagras mostly attacks from the front with bites and lunges, but watch out – it can also do other things!
